You will be responsible for managing the transport network across Commnet’s sites with a focus on finding more reliable and cost-effective options than those currently in place; including microwave path design and engineering, and supporting a hybrid of fixed-wireless and GPON (FTTP) broadband networks. If you have worked in the western or rural areas of the United States and would like to support the roll-out of microwave and lit broadband technologies from an xHaul perspective, this job might be for you. You will join an excellent team of Transport, Network and Data Engineers, working closely to optimize and expand the network, and collaborate with PMs, Site Dev & Engineering, Field Operations, Fiber Engineering, RF, Business Development, and service providers.

The candidate must be motivated to contribute to an evolving and growing network delivering high-quality broadband communications services to Tribal Communities & Rural America, driving digital inclusion, and providing access to great education, work, healthcare, safety, entertainment, and community connectivity.


Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Planning, designing, optimizing and managing the microwave network.
  • Perform and oversee network integration of transport nodes, and their related fiber and ethernet backhaul circuits.
  • Works directly with Transport Analyst, Engineers, Data Network Engineering and Operations teams.
  • Perform microwave path analysis and performance, path calculations, radio selection, antenna sizing, frequency planning, PCN filing and tracking, and licensing.
  • Design, document and manage microwave path network topology/mapping of existing and new sites, their capacities, and assurance of related circuit inventorying.
  • Own and develop a designated market/region’s backhaul network.
  • Create and collaborate on microwave node BOMs.
  • Ensure functional Transport milestones and project schedules are met.
  • Actively recommend network improvements to RF, Data Network Engineers, and Fiber Engineering.
  • Actively contribute to process development, improvements, and knowledgebase sharing.
  • Work with management on future transport engineering programs and budget forecasting.
  • Negotiate with LEC, ILEC, IXC, and other backhaul providers for interconnect services.
  • Ensure that work meets all applicable engineering, financial, planning, and operational standards.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.


Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in the Wireless and Telecom industry Telecommunications industry, specifically in Microwave Design, Performance management, Monitoring and Procurement of microwave, fiber and copper networks.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and 3 years of professional technical work experience; advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience with 5GHz – 24GHz, 70GHz – 90GHz microwave and mmWave frequencies.
  • Experience with Path Loss 5.0 Tool for engineering MW paths.
  • Experience with monitoring of MW paths, troubleshooting and resolving degraded paths.
  • Knowledge of microwave management systems, i.e., ProVision, NSP, cnMaestro.
  • Knowledge of MEF & VPL Ethernet, GigE transports speeds and interconnections, industry carriers and transport providers.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of Microwave, Ethernet, and Fiber Optic Transport systems, interfaces and cabling specifications.
  • Experience with circuit acceptance best practices, RFC2544 and Y.1564 testing.
  • Highly motivated self-starter who can work with little or no supervision.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills, and who can handle multiple projects and a diverse range of co-worker personalities.
  • Ability to describe and discuss business cases, along with NPV analysis, Cost of Capital and Tax Impacts to Managerial Projects.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation skills and follow-up skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office platform including Visio, and network mapping topology tools
  • Experience with circuit monitoring tools, i.e., NNMi, PRTG
  • Travel, less than 25% of the time.
  • Candidate must reside within one of these CONUS time zones MT/EST/CST/PST


Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with Metasolv (Inventory Management System), ArcGIS, and Mapcom.
  • Experience with any of the following: Aviat, Nokia, Cambium, Siklu and Ceragon microwave equipment.
  • Experience with RF, Fixed-Wireless and GPON networks.
  • Knowledge of IP and Ethernet Transport protocols, interfaces and routing protocols.
  • Knowledge of WDM, CWDM, DWDM, LTE, 5G and GPON technologies.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Hiring Compensation Range: $75,000- $110,000 (compensation determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
