Summary Description
Responsible for organizing clinical and biomechanical research projects working with our orthopaedic and sports medicine faculty, residents, fellows and students. Collaborates with physicians and researchers in designing and conducting biomedical education/research Receives and prepares anatomical specimens, prepares the laboratory and designs specialized fixation devices. Coordinates and supervises in-house surgical procedures for biomedical research on cadaveric specimens in a controlled operating room-like setting including proper positioning and draping of the anatomical specimens. Coordinates and prepares education and training on the use of specialized medical instrumentation and devices and anatomy workshops for physicians, physician’s assistants and industry. Maintains the bio-skills laboratory to the performance standard defined by DMC Sports Medicine Program and DMC Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program. This includes but is not limited to ordering supplies, organizing equipment and maintaining proper records. Complies with OSHA standards. Performs specimen handling and storage according to established protocols for human or animal tissues and/or body fluids.
Under limited direction, contributes in the development, conduct and submission of independent clinical and/or laboratory research, grant support and/or sponsorship to external funding agencies. Collaborates with other researchers and stimulates productivity of staff. May take a leadership role in studies. Assists on the development and implementation of quantitative measurement systems for clinical and/or laboratory use. Assists with and participates in special projects focusing on various aspects of specialty. Prepares detailed reports and/or abstracts and participates in presentations
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or related field. Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or related field preferred.
2. One year of research experience in a related area.
3. Experience designing and building specialized test fixtures preferred.
Skills/Abilities Required
1. Analytical ability to evaluate biomedical research equipment
2. Technical knowledge of specialized biomechanical research, biomedical engineering system analysis and design, physical analogies of biological sub-systems, and vendor items and alternatives.
3. Ability to create custom fixation devices for biomedical research.
4. Interpersonal skills to work productively with staff, students, patients, outside vendors and other medical personnel.
