Job description

As part of a collaborative team of public servants, a Nurse III surveyor protects residents’ health and safety by conducting on-site high priority inspections and investigations in Texas long-term care facilities (nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and day activities and health services sites) to assess their compliance with state and federal laws and rules. This position offers a competitive starting salary; excellent state benefits, including health insurance and retirement; and the opportunity to regularly travel to different facilities within a region. In this front-line field position, an investigator is mobile and flexible and performs minimal work at an office, though the role does require writing reports detailing any deficiencies/violations against a facility, remedies to correct those deficiencies, and narrative to support regulatory determinations. Communicates on a complex level with others (internally or externally) to provide, exchange, or verify information, answer inquiries, address issues, or resolve problems or complaints.
Completes inspection/survey reports listing deficiencies and prepares written reports supporting the actions and remedies recommended.
Visits facilities to verify correction of previously cited regulatory violations.
Conducts exit conferences with facility staff regarding findings and may assist in developing a plan to correct deficiencies.
Conducts certification surveys, licensure inspections, or investigations in facilities to determine compliance with federal and state regulations.
Performs quality assurance reviews of documents prepared by others (for example, publications, assessments, reports). Testifies at hearings or in court proceedings to provide information regarding policy/procedures, history, findings, or activities related to the survey process.
Conduct investigations of high priority intakes to be initiated within 24 hours.
Knowledge of nursing principles and acceptable professional standards of patient care.

Must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. Must successfully obtain Surveyor Minimum Qualification (SMQT) within the first year of employment.
Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of Texas or state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact and in good standing
Experience in a Long-Term Care Regulation program preferred.
Two years of experience as a practicing registered nurse in a hospital, an institutional health care facility, home health nursing Must be current experience.
Knowledge of gerontology preferred
Starting Salary for this position is $75,000. Full-Time position works compressed work schedule, Friday through Monday, 10-hour shifts. Requires some overnight travel. HHSC FLSA work week is Saturday - Friday
