Position Summary:


The K-3 Literacy Coach ensures students in K-3 classrooms in the Plaquemines Parish School System receive high quality literacy instruction. The K-3 Literacy Coach leads the development and improvement for K-3 teachers in a school building via training, observations, model lessons, feedback conversations, data analysis and more. The K-3 Literacy Coach serves as the early literacy content expert and provides support on curriculum, high quality interactions, and the science of teaching reading.


This position follows the school calendar of the Plaquemines Parish School District, but may require additional training during summer or school breaks.


Position Responsibilities:


Literacy Curriculum & Instruction

  • Observes teachers, provides feedback, and identifies next steps to improve instruction
  • Works with the school leadership and grade level teams to develop and refine models of excellence in literacy instruction
  • Coordinates and implements high-quality reading curriculum planning and delivery of literacy strategies in all subjects to improve reading, writing, and speaking skills
  • Provides on-going support for staff through facilitating professional learning communities, observation/ feedback, and modeling the use of appropriate literacy strategies in all subjects
  • Models exemplar lessons rooted in the five pillars of reading
  • Supports lesson preparation using high-quality curriculum
  • Models and supports high-quality feedback
  • Supports data collection through age-appropriate assessment practices

Literacy Assessments and Use of Data

  • Coordinates the administration of the screeners and data collection through age-appropriate assessment practices
  • Analyzes data, identifies trends, and support teachers to adjust instruction based on data
  • Consults with and supports coordination of RTI data organization, analysis, and student intervention assignments
  • Coordinate the development of the students’ triennial literacy plans as per the legislative mandates
  • Assists literacy interventionists and other staff with using data to determine appropriate instructional support
  • Shares literacy screener results with all stakeholders via meetings and website

Literacy Learning Supports/Interventions

  • Works with school leaders to coordinate, design, and implement an adequate system of instruction that ensures all students learn to read and write effectively (this includes personalized learning plans)
  • Supports on-going progress monitoring and adjustments to learning support assignments and schedules
  • Assists with designing the instructional model and associated professional development and curriculum selection for reading and writing interventions
  • Facilitates on-going professional development for teachers and staff

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Ten (10) years of professional experience preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years as a certified K-3 reading teacher required
  • Experience leading other adults preferred
  • Completion of Content Leader training and/or enrolled in or completion of Act 108 training
  • Data to demonstrate effectiveness as a reading teacher
  • Proven results when working with struggling readers
  • Strong understanding of how young children learn to read
  • Knowledge and experience working with high-quality reading curriculum
  • Experience facilitating adult learning and delivering professional development
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced computer and technology skills
  • Knowledge and expertise in working collaboratively with teachers and staff to improve practice
  • Ability to promote student motivation and engagement in learning
  • Knowledge and expertise in classroom management
  • Enthusiasm for and experience in supporting and developing adults
  • Experience in a high expectations school setting
