Eagle Island is the former summer home of Admiral Robert E. Peary, the American Arctic explorer who is widely credited as being the first person to reach the North Pole. The 17-acre island is situated two miles south of Harpswell Neck and is one of the outermost islands in Casco Bay. Eagle island has a busy working waterfront and is the only coastal Park in Maine which provides launch service to visitors. The Peary summer home has been preserved as a museum although the building has been closed to the public since 2020 due to a mold infestation and ongoing renovations. There is also a welcome center which was funded and constructed by the Friends of Peary’s Eagle Island volunteer organization. The caretaker’s cottage serves as the park headquarters and the Manager’s residence.
Typical Job Duties:
- Greeting visitors at the dock and helping to unload passengers.
- Fee Collection.
- Educating the public on park rules and regulations.
- Safely operating the launch to ferry visitors from their boats to the dock.
- Operating the 19-foot welded aluminum skiff to and from the island and in the greater vicinity of Casco Bay.
- Conducting routine cleaning and maintenance of all park facilities including the museum, cottage, composting toilet facilities, and welcome center.
- Performing general maintenance and upkeep on moorings, pier, trails, and lawns.
- Cleaning and caring for historical artifacts in the museum and library.
- Working with and occasionally managing volunteers from Friends of Peary’s Eagle Island.
Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge and/or experience in park maintenance and operations or equivalent.
Holiday and weekend work is required. This position is required to wear a uniform, provided by the agency.
