Definition & Duties

Under the supervision of the Ambulance Director, the Assistant Director, Education Supervisor or Field Supervisor, receives on-the-job training and job-related education to provide EMT level patient care in accordance with the ambulance service protocols and under the direction of the medical control physician or physician designee. Assist assigned mentor (management member/Field Training Officer) with EMT duties and follow instruction as entry-level trainee.

Knowledge of & Ability to

  • EMS and the operations of an advanced ambulance service
  • EMT level pre-hospital medical care standards
  • County roads, landmarks, use of maps and route planning
  • Traffic laws and regulations in the State of Iowa
  • Safe work practices and emergency vehicle operations
  • English language to include grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary

  • Be detail-oriented and accurate while performing duties
  • Operate an emergency vehicle safely in all weather conditions
  • Represent Johnson County and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and competing priorities

  • Keep accurate records and reports

  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time
  • Lift, move, carry, push and/or pull a minimum of 50 pounds and occasionally up to 125 pounds
  • Sit, squat, kneel, crawl, jump, twist, reach, bend, stoop, stand, and step into and out of an ambulance
  • Endure exposure to adverse weather conditions and terrains while conducting field work
  • Handle potential exposure to harmful blood and body fluids, infectious disease, harmful chemicals and drugs
  • Have sufficient manual dexterity to make handwritten notations and which permits moderate use of a keyboard and mouse
  • Have sufficient vision which permits light to moderate production and review of a wide variety of materials both in electronic and hard copy forms
  • Have sufficient personal mobility to complete work at various locations
  • Work flexible schedule and be on-call as assigned

Minimum Education, Training & Experience & Special Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent.

Special requirements: Must pass background check. Valid driver’s license and insurable under county liability coverage. Safe driving record.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.


  • Completes EMT duties as instructed by mentor.
  • Responds to request for service and/or calls for service as directed.
  • Transports patients to their respective destination.
  • Performs duties of an EMT as defined in service protocols approved by the Service Program Medical Director.
  • Completes and submits patient care report, billing sheet and other related documentation.
  • Provides prompt evaluation and treatment for individuals presenting with acute symptoms or distress.
  • Assists with Johnson County Ambulance Service (JCAS) assigned duties when available.
  • Completes GuideLink Center (GLC) orientation.
  • Represents Johnson County and participates in training/professional development activities and work related meetings as requested.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County/Department policies, procedures, safety practices and the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Attends work regularly at the designated place and time.
