Variable pay may provide additional opportunities for financial awards. This job is eligible to participate in IP’s short –term incentive plan.

The Job You Will Perform:


The PS&D leadership team is responsible for leveraging the capabilities of operations, maintenance, and other support resources to maximize the performance of both the Shipping and Recycle Fiber departments. We must provide quality, timely, and cost-effective services and products to both internal and external customers.

The PS&D Technical Assistant – Shipping reports to the PS&D Business Unit Manager. The TA is to provide leadership and support to the operating crews and is responsible for all operational activities within the Shipping department. This position also serves as the mill’s facility liaison to our headquarters based supply chain team. Focus areas for the TA include safety, daily performance, inventory management, machine schedules, order fulfillment, shipment execution, system development, cost and efficiency improvements, spending/budget, equipment maintenance, reliability, quality, and customer satisfaction. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Maintain department and enterprise daily and monthly metrics at or better than targets by establishing clear goals and providing requisite resources to direct reports. Establish performance measures, monitor inputs/outputs, and implement action plans for optimized operations and overall continuous improvement. Incorporate centerline philosophies, management by exception, and operator driven reliability practices.

  • Serve as facility point of contact/liaison for the headquarters based Supply Chain team. Responsible for collaborating with the supply chain organization to ensure machine schedules and transportation plans are executable - optimized/balanced to meet both mill production as well as customer demand needs. Ensure timely communication of process upsets, schedule changes, and shipment replanning requests. Respond to Supply/Replenishment planning or customer service requests for inventory application to orders, shipment corrections (virtual/actual returns and diversions), trial requests, and hot shipment notifications.

  • Verify and evaluate employee performance. Provide coaching and feedback to operators.

  • Conduct 1 to 1’s and review active development plans with every direct report in accordance to roadmap guidelines. Engage employees by providing leadership and direction. This includes listening and responding to employee issues, taking decisive actions, recognizing excellent performance, and holding employees accountable for undesirable behaviors.

  • Identify staff development and training needs and coordinate with the Department Learning Leader to ensure that training is completed. Contribute to the development of operators’ skills and knowledge, by providing assessment, on the job training, and input into development and delivery of training.

  • Evaluate departmental safety and housekeeping practices. Ensure all four shifts are meeting expectations. Conduct observations, audits, and inspections and hold employees accountable.

  • Ensure proper equipment care and maintenance through the planning and execution of both routine and annual maintenance outages, adhering to MWS processes, and driving the Basic Care and reliability efforts for the department. This requires focus on developing a strong reliability culture where a clear partnership exists between Maintenance and Operations.

  • Maintain quality that meets or exceeds customer expectations by producing and shipping products that are within specifications and arrive damage free.

  • Manage the area staffing, operational performance, equipment reliability, outage execution, and spending to achieve budgets. Make decisions based on the best-cost alternative, using knowledge and understanding of department fixed and variable cost budgets

  • Lead and support the shipping department root cause failure analysis (RCFA) efforts. Provide summary of evidence, root cause identification, immediate action and long-term corrections to eliminate root cause

  • Eliminate non-value added activities (waste)

  • Maintain records, prepare reports, and compose correspondence relative to the work of the area.
  • Champion Manufacturing Excellence principles. Drive and support deliberate improvement efforts for the department

  • Ensure proper labor relations and conditions of employment are maintained

  • Respond to other departmental needs as required

The Skills You Will Bring:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree (Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Engineering, or related field) or comparable combination of education/work experience required
  • 3-5 years leadership experience in manufacturing, warehousing, or logistics environment preferred
  • Pulp and Paper Industry experience desired
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in PPR Omega, SAP, and Microsoft Office

Key Challenges:

  • Position requires onsite presence (this is not a remote position)
  • Position is located in a Mill which is considered a heavy industrial environment that includes heavy machinery, loud noises and potentially strong smells.
  • May have to work outside normal business hours in support of mill outages and/or upset conditions.
