The School of Data Science at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a newly created Student Success Advisor to support the undergraduate program. The Student Success Advisor serves as the frontline contact for over 400 minor students and the growing undergraduate faculty. This inaugural position advises students concerning their academic plans, progress, and academic/career goals, in order to assist the students in making personal education decisions and meeting graduation requirements. They must be able to interpret student needs and provide individualized service and assistance while maintaining confidentiality. They collaborate with other academic initiatives to integrate program activities.

Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, Academic Advisors are expected to possess extensive knowledge about academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services within the scope of their responsibilities.

The School of Data Science - UVA's 12th and most recent academic school - is undergoing an exciting rapid growth with our student population. The M.S. in Data Science program is cohort-based, and includes an 11-month full-time program, an 18 month (on average) part-time program, and a 22-month dual-degree program with Darden. The students come from various undergraduate majors and institutions, with varying levels of work experience. Our part-time students generally tend to be working professionals, who find great benefit in the flexibility that online courses offer for their schedules. Most of our students are looking for their first jobs in data science, whether it be their first full-time role, or due to them making a career change.

General Responsibilities :

  • Advise students individually and/or with groups regarding academic and/or departmental requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources.

  • Serve as a liaison with students and their academic major advisor.

  • Assist students with identification of long-term goals and career plans.

  • Serve as a member of the greater Office of Student Affairs team and support events, initiatives, and students across all SDS Programs.

  • Work to position students to meet requirements for graduation within appropriate periods of time while preparing them to meet future goals.

  • Advise special populations of students within scope of responsibility, such as new or transfer students, undeclared majors, minority groups, etc., assisting in exploration of academic programs, and focusing on academic direction, procedures, policies, and available resources.

  • Maintain advising records and confidential student evaluation records.

  • Utilize UVA student information systems (SIS) and Salesforce to support delivery of advising service.

  • Serve on appropriate department, college and/or Grounds advisory committees.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities.

  • At least 4 years of experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines

  • Solid computer skills including experience using Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities.

  • Student Information Systems (SIS) experience.

  • Demonstrated innovative problem- solving

The selected candidate will be required to work occasional evening, weekend hours to attend and support Office of Student Affairs events and programs.

Anticipated hiring range: $45,000 - $65,000

This position is fully in-person and located in Charlottesville, Virginia. The School of Data Science has a flex-work policy for administrative staff allowing up to two days to work elsewhere other than their assigned workstation.
