The Tri River Area (TRA) is a four-county partnership including Mesa, Delta, Montrose, and Ouray counties. Mesa County has a population of approximately 157,000, and the county office is located in Grand Junction. The area population is growing as people relocate for employment, retirement, and the desirability of the area as a place to live. Natural wonders provide abundant year-round recreational activities including camping, skiing, hiking, hunting, and fishing. Position Summary
The Associate Program Coordinator position will support the CSU Extension Tri River Area Horticulture staff in management of the Clifford Duncan Memorial Garden . The Clifford Duncan Memorial Garden is a native plant garden in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, the US Forest Service, and the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah & Ouray Reservation. It contains plants native to the Grand Valley and structures important to Ute people. It serves as a learning garden and CSU Extension hosts hundreds of visitors each year on guided tours, hosted by trained docents. Visitors include students of all ages, adult learners, and others. The garden is located behind the CSU Extension office at 2775 US 50, Grand Junction.
The Associate Program Coordinator will work with County Extension staff to maintain and improve the garden and to support programming. Job duties will include caring for the garden, improving garden signage and interpretation, advertising the garden, training docents, creating new activities, and coordinating with the tribe on visits to the garden and workshops. This opportunity will be offered from April to mid November 2023 or as weather or unforeseen natural elements allow. The Associate Program Coordinator will be expected to work 20 hours a week. This is a seasonal, non-student hourly position.

Position Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to work in Grand Junction.
  • Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation, and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience.
  • Exhibits organizational skills and ability to prioritize.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Ability to operate hand and mechanical garden tools and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Garden or landscape maintenance experience such as weed control, planting, pruning, and other general maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Colorado native plants and ethnobotany.
