Work Schedule: Day Shift, Monday-Friday with as-needed weekends

Reports to: Director of Technical Product Support and Development for Fermentation- Ivonne Dresser

Hourly Rate: $20.75-25.00
About: The Gusmer Fermentation and Innovation Center focuses on new product development through precision fermentation bioreactors and sophisticated analytical capabilities to support fermentation development by providing detailed analytical data and support.
Position Summary: Under general supervision, performs the routine set-up of fermentations, monitoring, and analysis of the fermentations. Also performs some chemical analysis of products, alcoholic beverages, and other related materials pertaining to the operation while observing the facility's safety practices, procedures, and quality system. The Laboratory Technician position requires significant laboratory effort and hands-on work; requires some tasting of alcoholic beverages for sensory evaluation purposes.
Essential Functions
- Laboratory: Maintain a clean and organized lab space. Order and maintain lab supplies as required. Support with preparation of experiments, collecting data and samples. Complete technical service requests (TSR's, application briefs). This includes but not limited to completing filtration, wine fermentation, brewing, enzymatic and process optimization experiments and writing results in a technical report.
- Collaboration and Support: Collaborate with customers, sale and product management for on-site trials and TSR's. Support R&D, QC and Manufacturing as required. Communicate test results to supervisor and research scientists on staff.
- Standard Operating Procedures: Responsible for following re writing and revising standard operating procedures (SOP). Documents fermentation experimental designs and data through concise reports and SOP's. Responsible for SOPs including but not limited to the operation of Eppendorf 1.5L bioreactors, Flow Cytometer, and good laboratory practices.
- Maintenance and Customer Technical Support of Laboratory Equipment: Responsible for maintaining lab equipment, preventative maintenance, and current with lab safety equipment. Work with product managers to connect with customers for their troubleshooting of assigned lab equipment.
Other Duties
- Attend and participate in trade shows and conferences as required.
- Participate and support hands on product training efforts as required
- Participate and support with any other technical services initiatives as required.

Experience and Education Requirements
- Bachelors in enology, biology, microbiology, food science, or related fields with hands on laboratory experience.
- Two or more years prior industry experience with winemaking, brewing, or other food related industry is preferred.
- Understanding of common microbiological techniques, setting experiments, and data collection.
- Experience in working with product areas such as wine, distilled spirits, beer, and juice is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's) Required
- Ability to write scientific reports.
- Ability to work without direct supervision.
- Knowledge of experimental design, laboratory equipment handling, troubleshooting and maintenance
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain a high attention to detail is required.
- Excellent organizational abilities and the ability to manage a variety of projects and assignments.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office, other computer programs, and technology.

Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Acute hearing is necessary for telephone and in-person communication with customers and fellow employees, and visual acuity sufficient to read a computer screen and paper documents.
Working Conditions
This position typically functions in a business environment with occasional trips into the warehouse. There will be exposure to moderate noise levels, fumes, dust, chemicals, heat/cold and allergens especially in warehouse environment.
