Position Information


The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking an experienced Concrete Truck Operator to operate heavy construction equipment. This crew member is primarily responsible for operating a 10 cubic yard concrete drum mixer truck to maintain, repair, and construct streets, curbs, gutters, driveway aprons, sidewalks, etc. for the Water, Sewer, and Streets (WSS) Bureau.

Specific duties include:


  • Operating a Concrete Truck to load, secure, and transport equipment and materials to and from job site;
  • Operating vehicles on major highways to deliver and dispose of concrete, sand, gravel, and dirt to various locations and work sites daily;
  • Operating backhoes, skid steers and other heavy construction equipment to grade surfaces for construction and to perform concrete restoration services;
  • Observing and interpreting hand signals of trades workers in backing-up vehicles;
  • Providing technical and safety guidance and on-site training to crew members and ensuring that all required safety guidelines are adhered to;
  • Ensuring assigned vehicles and equipment are cleaned and maintained;
  • Assisting in daily tasks for crew and serving as back-up in the absence of Crew Leader; and
  • Responding to emergencies including water main breaks and snow removal operations.
The successful employee will be a team player, with demonstrated experience operating a concrete drum mixer truck.

Selection Criteria


Minimum:


  • High school diploma, GED, or the equivalent;
  • Three (3) years of experience in public works, construction, or another trades vocation that demonstrates the ability to perform semi-skilled to skilled manual maintenance and/or construction;
  • One (1) year of experience operating heavy/specialized equipment (i.e. concrete truck, medium and tandem dump truck, backhoe, skid steer, etc); and
  • Class A or B Commercial driver's license (CDL) required.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a Tankers endorsement for CDL and one or more of the following:
  • Two or more years of experience operating a concrete drum mixer truck and/or similar equipment;
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance on equipment;
  • Experience using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS); and/or
  • Field construction experience with reading/interpreting plans, cut sheets, etc.

Special Requirements


  • Applicant must possess a Class B or A commercial driver's license (CDL) at time of application.
  • Ability to obtain Tanker's endorsement (CDL) within first year of employment.
  • Applicant must possess a valid Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Intermediate Work Zone Certification or equivalent certification with the ability to obtain a Virginia certification within one year of hire date.
  • The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official driving record.
  • Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record and passing a pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards.
  • Applicant must provide written consent for Arlington County to obtain from previous employer's information required by DOT agency regulations concerning drug and alcohol testing information. Once hired, the employee will be subject to drug screening at such times during employment as required by federal, state, and local standards and regulations.
  • Candidates invited for interview may be asked to participate in skills testing involving the operation of equipment.
  • A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Additional special licensure, certifications, and/or endorsements may be required depending on area of assignment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is generally performed outdoors and in all types of weather conditions and often in proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current and exposure to high heat, chemicals, and/or biohazardous waste. The work environment may include exposure to fumes, odors, mists, loud noises, gases or poor ventilation, oils, and other cutting fluids and includes extended periods of standing, crouching, bending, lifting, stooping, pushing, pulling, or carrying light to very heavy objects and equipment. Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Requires learning and following all safety rules and regulations pertaining to job functions which includes attending all required safety classes and meetings in order to ensure a safe working environment and that team members are practicing the required safety rules and regulations.

Additional Information


Work Hours: 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Must be available on a rotating basis for emergency standby and call-back for emergencies such as street cave-ins and snow removal operations. Occasional overtime is required.
