The City of Norfolk's Slover Library invites applications for a part-time Library Assistant I position on its Youth Programs team. This position helps ensure Slover Library serves as a vital and dynamic “lighthouse” of community lifelong learning, civic engagement, and leading-edge technology available to all citizens of the region. Success in this position draws on the incumbent’s competencies in advocating an inclusive and diverse library environment, nurturing safe and accessible library spaces, and embracing innovative processes and technologies that enhance library operations.
This position serves in the Youth Programs Division and reports to the Youth Program Coordinators at Slover Library. Primary responsibilities of this position are assisting the public on our information desk on the children’s and teen floor, including answering phones, shelving books, assisting patrons in finding materials, providing readers advisory, assisting with programs, and creating book displays.
Slover Library is in beautiful downtown Norfolk on the corner of Plume and Atlantic Streets near MacArthur Square and the MacArthur Memorial.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Contribute to operational matters for Youth Services program area.- Assists in implementing operational policies and procedures.
- Coordinate with the Youth Programs staff on related operational matters.
- Contribute to other matters for the youth program area.
- Participate in professional development opportunities.
- Participate in program planning and other projects.
- Participate in assisting patrons on the children’s floor and teen floor information desk.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
Work requires broad general knowledge in a general professional or technical field usually acquired through experience in library, research, educational programming or related services, experience in early literacy, child development and related best practices. Requires proficiency with computers, internet searching, and Microsoft office applications such as WORD, EXCEL, and PowerPoint.
Six-months of experience in library or related customer service work.
Work Hours: This position is up to 20 hours per week. Workdays and hours will vary depending on organizational needs. This position will require flexibility to work some rotating weekends and evening schedules.
