Position Summary: : The Wrangler is responsible for the guest experience and safety of guests in every aspect of the Horse Program. Wranglers are responsible for conducting safe trail rides and instructing guests how to participate in horse activities in a safe manner. Wranglers are responsible for the care and safety of the herd and maintenance of trails, fencing and barn yard facilities.

Position Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, the Wrangler must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility in a safe and satisfactory manner, must be punctual and have a good attendance record and have reliable means of transportation to work.   • Absent extraordinary prior on-the-job experience, the Wrangler position requires advanced riding skills with horses of varied levels.
  • Requires an occupationally significant combination of vocational education, apprentice training, on-the-job training, and essential experience in less responsible group sales and event management positions.
  • Experience driving a team/wagon or hauling livestock a plus.
  • Clear knowledge of the local area, including tourist destinations and of-the-moment options.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  • Must have a valid Drivers’ License and meet insurability standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, newspapers, periodicals, journals, and manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, business letters, summaries, and reports in English using prescribed format, and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
  • Ability to speak effectively in English with customers or employees.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Must walk on uneven slick conditions in extreme weather conditions

Position Duties include, but not limited to:

  • The ability to retain knowledge of herd—know every horse name and their riding level.
  • Responsible for care of herd—food and water, supplements, medications, assist head wrangler with first aid and vetting. Familiarity with herd and daily monitoring for lameness, injuries, colic, etc. Feeding includes operation of tractor and other heavy machinery.
  • Maintain barnyard cleanliness and maintenance—cleaning stalls, cleaning barn, repairing broken items, noting when items are missing or broken beyond repair, cleaning tack regularly, ensuring guest facing areas are free of trash, horse poop, hazards, and everything is organized
  • Maintain corral cleanliness and maintenance—repairing fences, removing large rocks and hazards from corrals and feedlot, keeping areas safe for horses and guests
  • Communicate with Head Wrangler and Horse Program manager barn and horse needs
  • Communicate with Head Wrangler and Horse Program manager guest needs, inquiries, compliments, and complaints.
  • Interact with guests who come down to barnyard, educating about safety around horses and knowledge of herd and barn systems
  • Instruct guests how to ride horses and instruct guests on certain skills to keep them safe and advance their riding ability, including young children
  • Lead guests on trail rides—thorough knowledge of our trail systems and off-property trail systems, monitoring trail conditions and guest comfort levels to constantly assess safety of guests and horses.
  • Knowledge of Lone Mountain Ranch history and the environment we ride through, greater Yellowstone Ecosystem
  • Knowledge of tack and harnesses, ability to tack up 15-20 horses per day, untack horses, store tack properly, groom horses.
  • Harness teams of draft horses and drive wagons pulled by teams
  • First aid and CPR—ability to assist guests and other wranglers with injuries
  • Ability to drive a truck and haul a trailer full of horses
  • Ability to load and unload horses from a trailer
  • Ability to ride horses at a variety of levels
  • Administer basic first aid to horses if there are any kicks, bites or scrapes on horses; report any health issues that may require vet service to manager
  • Must be able to think and work as a team player
  • Deals with the public, customers, employees, community member and government officials with tact and courtesy, fostering positive relationships and maintaining an appropriate level of community public affairs involvement
  • Maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and provide support to other departments as needed.
  • Ensure guest satisfaction with excellent customer service, attention to detail and quality delivery.
  • Complete all paperwork and timecard entries in a timely manner.
  • Comply with Company’s operating controls, SOP’s, policies, procedures, and service standards.
  • Communicate with Human Resources regarding employment term, attendance, injury, issues, and housing.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Must have excellent hand and eye coordination (horse pulling sleigh on narrow pathways).
