Webster University in St. Louis, MO, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor and Director of Jazz Studies for 1 year. We seek an active jazz performer and educator to join our highly collaborative faculty. The ideal candidate should demonstrate performance and pedagogical skills that are equally dynamic, adaptable, and firmly rooted in the depth of the jazz tradition. Classroom instruction may include courses in jazz improvisation, jazz theory, jazz history, jazz scoring and arranging, and jazz education methods. Additional responsibilities may include ensemble direction (both combos and the Jazz Collective, the University big band), and instruction in a master class setting. A full teaching load may also include applied music instruction in jazz within the private studio.

The Director of Jazz Studies will also administer the Jazz@Webster concert series, now in its 41st year of highly diversified and creative programing. Coordination of and assigning students to applied faculty, and a commitment to successful recruitment and retention of students to the program are important components of the appointee's administrative responsibilities as well.

The successful candidate will engage in student advising and supervise student projects and research. Additional assignments may include teaching courses in support of the music theory/musicology core, general education, and other duties assigned by the Chair of the Department of Music. Faculty members are expected to engage in appropriate creative and scholarly endeavors, and to serve the profession and the university.

Teach a minimum of three, 3-credit-hour courses or the equivalent per semester in support of the undergraduate and graduate jazz curriculum in music as well as other courses that serve the university depending on the candidate's expertise and the needs of the department. This would include teaching applied lessons to music majors and non-majors.

Oversee the jazz area by coordinating all course offerings within the undergraduate and graduate jazz degree programs, organizing applied lesson assignments for all jazz students, coordinating and participating in jazz juries, serving on student recital committees, and evaluating audition materials.

Oversee the scheduling, content, budgeting, performer relations and payment, and sound reinforcement for the Jazz@Webster concert series. The Director will also frequently perform with members of the jazz faculty and guests on the concert series.

Organize and direct the week-long Webster Summer Jazz Camp each July.

Advise undergraduate students.

Participate in departmental assessment activities.

Participate in continued development of new core curriculum.

Participate in regular departmental reviews of students including entrance, ongoing, and end-of-program reviews.

Serve the department and the university through committee work and other opportunities, which includes but is not limited to assisting adjuncts; recruitment and retention activities; university-level program assessments; outreach and promotion.

Minimum Qualifications
Masters degree in music with extensive professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Earned doctorate in music. Significant experience and success as a recruiter of students in their current or previous employment in the jazz area.
