UTILITY SYSTEM OPERATOR- PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT


The Elk Grove Village Department of Public Works is seeking a qualified Utility System Operator. This position is under the general direction of the Utility Foreman. This position is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing the Village’s water and wastewater pumping systems and related equipment.

Responsibilities

The Utility System Operator’s general responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Spends considerable time at water pumping facilities and wastewater lift stations.
  • Monitors and adjusts water flow rates from the Village’s water supplier to meet demand requirements and manage water storage.
  • Monitors the operation of the wastewater lift station for efficient operation and potential problems.
  • Utilizes SCADA systems and operates and maintains line-shaft and submersible well equipment as an emergency water supply.
  • Performs manual labor frequently, requiring physically demanding semi-skilled tasks.

Minimum Qualifications :

Graduate of High School or GED. Minimum of four (4) years experience in Public works operations, or directly related field, including the maintenance and repair of pumping station/water distribution equipment. Associate Degree in General Studies or Sciences is desirable. Considerable skill in troubleshooting the nature and seriousness of system malfunctions and making repairs, working skills in reading and interpreting meters, gauges, and schematics, as well as recording readings and preparing reports. Demonstrated experience and skills working with low and medium-voltage electricity. The ability to understand and manage the hydraulic operation of a water distribution and pumping system is required. Ability to work independently with minimal direction strongly desired. Ability to work overtime and respond to off-hour emergencies as necessary.



License and Certification Requirements

Preferred to have IEPA Water Operator’s License Class C or ability to obtain licenses within twelve (12) months of employment.

Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker and air brake endorsements or to obtain licenses within six (6) months of employment.



HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week, plus emergency overtime as needed. Alternating weekend standby assignments are required.

STARTING WAGE: $33.02 to $46.00

OPENING DATE: Thursday, March 23, 2023

CLOSING DATE: Friday, April 14, 2023
