TRANSPORTATION CONSTRUCTION TECHNICIAN
Job description
The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of highly skilled technical work in survey, inspection of highway landscape construction projects, field testing quality control tests on materials, verifying quantities, documentation of daily construction activities, contracts, employee interviews, and construction checklist. Duties and basic tasks include; operation of motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement and minor structure inspection, landscape and irrigation installation inspection, roadside shoulder restoration and erosion repair inspection, signing and striping inspection, traffic control setup, equipment, and materials inspection, environmental compliance, jobsite safety inspection and vehicle and equipment
care. Depending on the work location and assignment, positions allocated to this classification can encounter extremes of cold and heat, considerable time away from home base, rugged terrain, and high speed traffic conditions. Complete administrative documentation and complex engineering reports, and training other ADOT personnel on assigned construction project. Will normally be assigned to more than one area of construction and can be subject to irregular work hours. Overtime may be required including working nights, weekends and holidays. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary.
Performs inspections of earthwork, storm drains, base courses, guardrail, incidental concrete, landscaping, signing, striping, asphaltic concrete paving operations, portland cement paving operations, and major and minor concrete structures. Ensures work is in compliance with applicable standards and specifications to ensure public safety on the state highway system. Reviews project plans, special provisions, other project documents in order to ensure project items are inspected in conformance.
Performing field and laboratory materials quality assurance sampling and testing using applicable equipment on Portland cement concrete, aggregates, asphaltic concrete, and other materials used in highway construction. Documents sampling and testing and ensures results are distributed as appropriate. Conducting labor compliance interviews, checking certified payrolls. Overnight travel will be required.
Inspects installations and repairs of all highway system features and components, checks for conformance, performance, and documents status for electronic management and data storage records. System features include but not limited to signs, guardrail, barriers, walls, channels, pavements drainage structures, landscape and irrigation components, etc.
Operation of powered/non-powered equipment and tools to properly perform assigned work duties as described in the job summary. Vehicles include pickup trucks, cars, and or passenger vans.
Incumbent must be able to respond to emergency call outs when on assignment (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) Overtime will be required when working contractor work hours, including working nights, weekends, and holidays.
Knowledge of:
Methods, procedures, and techniques used in highway construction, project documentation, materials testing, survey, and project inspection
Procedures, practices, and methods of the operation of vehicles and equipment used in roadway operations, roadside operations, landscape and irrigation operations, sign operations, striping operations, and traffic control operations
Math, accounting, grammar, and computer systems including Word, Excel, FAST, Penbase reporting and related construction documentation programs
Landscape materials, herbicides, irrigation systems
Skills in:
Applying and making minor interpretations of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to work activities, safety practices and public relations
Operating a variety of equipment such as survey instruments, material testing equipment, computers and office equipment
Operating a vehicle in a construction setting and on the road
Analyzing, evaluating, and preparing a wide variety of engineering related technical data
Using proper materials and tools, vehicles and equipment to perform work activities within established work methods
Verbal and written communications
Problem solving and interpersonal relationships

One year experience at the TCT II level and/or one year experience at the HOT II level or equivalent experience similar to a TCT II.
Valid driver's license
ATTI Field Technician Level I and ACI Concrete Field Test Technician - Grade I. ATSSA Traffic Control Technician.
A physical is required
This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete and sign PART 1 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR). If considered, PART 2 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment allows a record review and reference check. The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.11 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR and record review/ reference check.
