This position is located in the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), Transportation Operations Division (TSD), Field Operations Branch. The incumbent in this position will receive work assignments from a sign installation crew leader and will install, maintain, replace and remove a wide variety of traffic control and traffic directional and information signs, flags and banners on the streets, highway and highway structures in the District of Columbia.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will perform a variety of tasks by installing U-posts and will supply cement patch or tampered earth around U-posts. This work will be done using, brackets, bolts and other hardware to mount signs to the U-post and, if required, use of a hack saw, through cutting U-posts to smaller sizes, removing U-posts with post puller when traffic regulations change, and installing additional signs on posts that are already installed. The incumbent will use agency recommended smart technology to perform assigned duties.

The work is performed as member of a team that is engaged in installation of various traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings. Periodic inspections are made by the incumbent to assess appearance, accuracy and adherence to established guidelines. Judgment must be exercised in proper placement of traffic control devices to assure a safe environment for pedestrians and motorists.

Qualifications and Education

A high school diploma or GED is required; applicants must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in their application materials, that they possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Licenses and Certifications

The incumbent of this position must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Working Conditions/Environment

The Street Sign Installer works mostly outdoors where traffic hazards, risks of electrical shock, jackhammer noise, concrete chips and dust, sledge hammer jolts and vibration are conditions met in the daily operations. Work at heights, from ladders and trucks (lift platform or bucket). Handles heavy equipment and materials with risk of cuts from aluminum plates and stainless-steel banding. The likelihood of bruises, strains, sprains and trauma from metal chips, splinters or other injuries also exist.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is covered under collective bargaining union and subject to union dues thru payroll deduction.

Emergency Designation: This position has been designated as an emergency employee position under the provisions of District Personnel Manual, Chapter 12. As such, your services may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties, i.e., snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter operation, food distribution, and communications. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when most employees are dismissed early. Employees are required to work rotating shifts, to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Employees are considered emergency personnel and are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

Position Designation: The incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability - Safety Sensitive. Accordingly, the incumbent will be subject to pre-employment checks (criminal background checks, consumer credit check, traffic record checks, if applicable) as a condition of employment, and will be subject to periodic criminal background checks for the duration of your tenure.
