Job Summary
Performs routine and emergency analytical test procedures on all specimens submitted to the Blood Bank. Prepares reagents for analytical tests according to designated procedures.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Performs, observes, interprets, and records a variety of immuno-hematological tests and procedures on both donor and recipient blood samples
- Prepares and dispenses blood and components for transfusion
- Updates and maintains computerized records of all transactions, answers queries, and communicates with clinicians
- Assures adequate updated inventories of blood components and supplies
- Reviews the work of Technicians when a Supervisor is not present
- Performs ABO grouping, Rh typing, antibody detection, and compatibility tests on donor and recipient blood samples
- Performs and interprets results of pre-transfusion tests accurately and consistently, determining serological compatibility between donor and recipient to prevent potentially harmful or fatal transfusion reactions
- Performs and interprets antibody identification studies of patients with positive antibody detection tests or a history of clinically significant antibodies to determine the specificity of the antibody(ies)
- Utilizes special techniques and procedures to identify multiple specificities
- Performs and interprets blood group antigen tests to select antigen-negative red blood cell products for transfusion and determines the antigenic makeup of sensitized recipients as it related to specific blood group systems
- Performs and interprets direct antiglobulin tests
- Performs Elution Studies to determine specificity of immunoglobulins on red cell surface
- Evaluates cases to determine immunological basis for hemolytic anemias and/or delayed hemolytic reactions
- Performs and interprets prenatal tests to identify mothers at risk for Rh sensitization and/or hemolytic disease of the newborn
- Interprets results of prenatal and cord blood studies to determine if the patient is an Rh-immune globulin candidate
- Performs fetal blood screening tests to detect large fetal-maternal transplacental hemorrhage and determines if a more sensitive test is indicated
- Interprets results of fetal acid elution tests for dosage adjustment of Rh-immune globulin
- Performs serological tests and clerical checks to evaluate transfusion reactions. Interprets results of direct and indirect antiglobulin tests
- Reports findings to Medical Director and Attending Physician
- Performs Group & Type and antibody screening tests on samples from blood donors collected at our facilities
- Ships samples to reference laboratory for required tests
- Selects, pools, labels, and dispenses Group & Type compatible blood components such as platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitate
- Consults flow charts to determine if requests are within guidelines
- Performs proficiency tests administered by the New York City/State Department of Health, College of American Pathologists, or other agencies on a periodic basis
- Records accurately all tests and transactions in the blood bank computer system and on forms. Dispenses blood, components, and accessories and answers telephone requests for components, test results, and general queries
- Maintains adequate inventory of blood, components, and supplies during tour of duty
- Performs and records Quality Control Tests on blood bank reagents and equipment according to the Food Drug Administration (FDA), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organization (JCAH), and the New York City/State Department of Health (DOH) regulations. Performs additional specialized tests as necessary
- Cleans and disinfects benches and equipment according to infection control guidelines from the New York City Department of Health
- Understands thoroughly the guidelines and standards of all five regulating agencies and knows the New York City Health Code
- Remains familiar with laboratory safety practices
- Meets criteria for competency assessment in all areas
- Takes specimens and performs analysis in other St. Luke’s-Roosevelt laboratories if required
- Performs work assignment within expected standards of performance
- Performs work assignment in a timely manner
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree required
Experience Requirements:
One year Blood Bank Technologist experience preferred. Six months clinical training program acceptable.
Licensing and Certification Requirements:
NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist license required
ASCP Certification required

Microsoft Office - Beginner

Compensation
The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $47.2189 - $60 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need.
