Senior Scientist Weed Control Innovations


YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES


The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Scientist – Weed Control Innovations, are to:


  • Independently identifies, designs, develops, and implements new bioassays or process improvements for workflow optimization and testing of plants in order to efficiently evaluate the impact of traits, gene edits, biologicals, and/or chemistries under greenhouse or growth chamber conditions;
  • Designs, conducts, and coordinates multiple complex greenhouse and growth chamber experiments to assess and characterize new herbicide active ingredients and novel herbicide formulations in Bayer portfolio, and their performance against weed resistant populations;
  • Partners with stakeholders in Small Molecules, Field Solutions, Market Development, and Regulatory Sciences to develop strategies and assess technical features of new weed control technologies to control herbicide resistant weeds;
  • Works collaboratively with statisticians, data scientists, and imaging specialists to validate new methods and experimental designs;
  • Analyzes, interprets, summarizes, and reports the results of scientific experiments to develop recommendations to the team, project leads, and Leadership and contributes to research projects, technologies, publications, intellectual property, and/or trade secrets;
  • Achieves commitment to safety and compliance, adhering to safety protocols and best practices;
  • Works closely with other Functional teams in Plant Biotechnology and Crop Science R&D to enable projects and collaborations across Bayer, and with academic community and other external partners;
  • Regularly interacts with R&D Data Science and Analytics to optimize controlled environment testing through tuned experimental designs, automated data collection and analysis, and the use of imaging for data collection.

Required Qualifications:


  • Minimum of Ph.D. in Weed Science, Crop Science, Plant Physiology, Plant Biotechnology, Phenomics, or related life sciences discipline;
  • Strong experience in conducting research trials and following scientific procedures with proven ability to work independently and effectively on cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams;
  • Experience designing and implementing experiments to evaluate plant phenotype and growth, under controlled environments;
  • Experience working in highly collaborative environment and effectively communicating research findings with audiences from diverse technical backgrounds;
  • Ability to work in a matrix organization and clearly communicate ideas/concepts and influence stakeholders;
  • Track record of solving complex problems autonomously utilizing original thinking, creativity, deductive reasoning and the application of scientific principles on the design and interpretation of scientific experiments.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Five or more years of relevant experience working on Weed Science or related field following completion of undergraduate degree (to include both academic & industrial experience);
  • Strong understanding of weed biology, herbicide physiology, herbicide modes of action, mechanisms of herbicide weed resistance, traditional weed control systems and herbicide tolerance traits in major agronomic crops (such as corn, soybean, cotton, and/or canola) in global markets;
  • Proficient and practical experience in imaging hardware and/or imaging analysis software for plant phenotyping and/or automated biological data capture with plants;
  • Proficient at analyzing large data sets and interpreting results from complex statistical designs.

Position will be located in Chesterfield, Missouri (St. Louis area).

Domestic relocation is not available for this role.
