The Senior Accountant, Grants will provide accounting support and manage financial operations for grants. The Senior Accountant, Grants will be responsible for managing, tracking, reporting, and assessing active grant data and will serve as departmental liaison between Accounting, Grants, Principal Investigators (PI), and government agencies.

This role will be responsible for preparation of financial reports, participating in grants compliance audits, evaluating grant revenue, preparation of program analysis, operationalizing grant budget and performance, and providing grant proposal budget support. The Senior Accountant, Grants will also support the Assistant Controller with the financial tracking and reporting of grants and provide payroll allocation support.

The Senior Accountant, Grants has internal contacts with the entire staff and external contact with tenants and vendors. This position has access to sensitive Science City financial information and is expected to handle such information with integrity and professionalism. This position is expected to represent the Science Center in a professional manner.

The Senior Accountant, Grants will report directly to the Assistant Controller. This position will participate in department activities as necessary.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provide general and grant accounting functions including:

Assist with grant budgeting, tracking, reporting, and preparing quarterly and periodic drawdowns.

Track and report grant revenue recognition.

Participates in grants compliance audits and report findings to leadership.

Prepare and submit mandated financial reports to government agencies.

Prepare program and grant budget gap analysis and present to Grants and Advancement Teams.

Maintain Payroll Grant Allocation Spreadsheet and update new grants & personnel changes.

Provide Payroll and Allocations support by reviewing timesheets of staff whose time is allocated to grants, updating HRIS accordingly and communicate with staff.

Review grant financial activity compared to budget; evaluate for compliance and advise on spending trends and forecasts.

Periodic review of spend-down on grant budgets.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Attend relevant workshops or join professional industry groups as necessary to maintain professional knowledge.

Adhere to the Science Center’s security guidelines and ensure the appropriate handling of sensitive information.

Facilitate and attend relevant staff meetings to promote communication and execution of goals.

Complete special projects specific to the function of the department or as needed for the department as directed by the Assistant Controller.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles.

Ability to analyze statistical spreadsheets, data, and budgets and use critical thinking to identify variances, provide forecasting, report conclusions, or recommend approaches to problems.

Demonstrates ability to execute daily and special project goals by carefully setting priorities, meeting deadlines, delegating appropriately, and scheduling time efficiently.

Ability to manage change in a positive and productive manner.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and effective communication with all levels of internal and external customers and staff.

Ability to organize multiple tasks in an efficient manner and follow-up and follow-through with strong attention to detail.

Demonstrates ability to work with other people through a cooperative effort.

Possesses strong interpersonal skills as demonstrated by compassionate, courteous, cordial, cooperative, and professional interaction with diverse groups of co-workers, external business partners, and the community.

Ability to operate a computer and use a variety of common software programs such as Microsoft Office

Adheres to all Science Center and departmental policies and procedures

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND LICENSURE

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-7 years of general accounting experience to include analytical reporting, budgeting, and basic understanding of grant tracking.

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

  • BS degree from an accredited university or college with a concentration in Accounting, Finance or Business is preferred.
