GENERAL PURPOSE
- This is a seasonal position of not more than 6 months that is responsible primarily for wildland urban interface thinning and mitigation efforts within Box Elder County, as well as some initial attack for wildland fires. The Fuels Crew Member works with full-time employees on thinning fuels and creating fuel breaks. The Fuels Crew Member also responds to local fires as initial attack for wildland fires. The Fuels Crew Member is regularly required to work with power tools such as, but not limited to, chainsaws and chippers.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
- Works under the general guidance and direction of the County Fuels Crew Lead, County Fire Marshal and the State Area Fire Management Officer

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- The Fuel Crew will travel to sites across Box Elder County, Utah chain sawing, chipping, and occasionally burning trees and brush on private and state lands.
- Work will primarily occur in the Wildland Urban Interface protecting houses and property as well as restoring riparian and upland habitat.
- In addition to fire fuels removal work, fuel crew will get red carded to be available to fight wildland fire during the season. This may entail multiple weeks on large fires, initial attack with fire wardens on fires in the county, prescribed fire, and/or pile burning.
- While we will be certifying the crew for their wildland firefighter type 2, a vast majority of time will be spent doing fuels removal work so fire time may be minimal and there may not be fire suppression time at all.
- A typical work week will consist of 4 ten hour days working in the county for up to 6 months.
- Attend and participate in Wildland fire training (crew members will receive their Red Card).
- Physical Training.
- Will be required to travel to different sites and stations.
- Performs other duties as required.
- This position is anticipated to work 40 hours/week. Potential to work overtime for fire response or deployment seasonal position to last no longer than 6 months. There are no benefits associated with this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Experience:
- At least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Must be able to pass physical requirements – run 3 miles with a 45 pound weighted vest in 45 minutes or less.
OR
- Any equivalent combination of closely related education and experience.
- Wildland and/or red card certification preferred.
- Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of fire control, suppression, prevention methods and procedures, and all related equipment.
- Ability to perform strenuous work to include operating hand tools on trails and open space.
- Considerable knowledge of county geography, department policy, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine the proper course of action under stressful and emergency conditions.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to prepare written reports using proper grammar and spelling.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements established by the department.
- Ability to use job related computers and software applications.

- Ability to perform strenuous work to include operating hand tools on trails and open space.
- Involves considerable exposure to stressful situations, strenuous and moderately heavy physical activity; required to stand, walk, crawl or sit in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time; involves exposure to dangerous situations under disagreeable conditions such as cold, wet, high temperatures, toxic fumes, smoke, excessive noise, hazardous materials, communicable diseases, vibration, heights, confined spaces, emergency driving, little to no sleep for extended periods, etc.
May be subject to lifting and dragging items of excessive weight.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess current valid Utah Class D license.
- Must be in good physical health, and be able to pass an annual physical examination.
- Must be able to pass criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen.
Must be able to work unconventional working hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Applicants should be at least 18 years old, a high school graduate or equivalent and must be able to pass firefighter physical requirements – run 3 miles with a 45 pound weighted vest in 45 minutes or less. Applicant must have a current valid Class D Utah driver license. Wildland and/or red card certification preferred.
