POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, the employee utilizes a general understanding of the principles of nursing and basic physical assessment skills in the development and implementation of individualized nursing care plans to ensure that the needs of the residents are met. The employee assists in the orientation and provides supervision of nursing personnel, attends to the daily operations of the unit, and assumes responsibilities of a leadership role as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Takes an active role in direct resident assessment and care.
  • Supervises and coordinates nursing personnel in providing direct resident care in adherence to state, federal and corporate guidelines.
  • Formulates individualized nursing care plans utilizing the nursing process.
  • Assesses each resident daily and implements a change during care as needed.
  • Assists the physician on rounds and ensures that pertinent information is communicated to and from him/her and orders are taken correctly.
  • Participates in the training and supervision of nursing personnel.
  • Effectively utilizes the general principles of leadership and supervision.
  • Manages conflict through effective problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Acts calmly and efficiently in handling emergency situations.
  • Prepares daily assignments for the identification of potential safety hazards and for the identification of noncompliance with corporate guidelines as set forth in the policy and procedure manual.
  • Prepares daily assignment of duties, treatments, and miscellaneous tasks.
  • Maintains accurate resident care records and documents pertinent data reflecting the use of the nursing process.
  • Attends and participates productively in the resident care meetings, staff meetings and in-services.
  • Takes an active role in teaching (formal or informal presentation) with residents, families, and staff.
  • Dispenses medication and performs treatments, as per physician's order, and in accordance with policies, procedures, and licensure standard of practice.
  • Assures that each resident's attending physician and family or responsible party are promptly notified of any significant change in the resident's health condition.
  • Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals' needs and rights.
  • Performs additional duties as requested.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • The Registered Nurse interacts with customers, families, visitors, facility, and corporate personnel.
  • Carries out other tasks as requested in situations where hands-on intervention/participation may be required.
  • May be required to work rotating shifts, holidays, weekends, to work in different units and positions, and to work overtime as facility needs require.
  • Must practice good personal hygiene and follow required dress code.
  • Must provide annual verification of a negative TB skin test as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • This position requires a current valid Registered Nurse license issued in the State of Ohio. Candidate must be a graduate of an approved School of Nursing.
  • Up-to-date physical assessment skills and comprehensive knowledge of nursing principles are required.
  • Recent experience in geriatric or rehabilitative nursing and experience in supervisory capacity are preferred.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have thorough knowledge of nursing, techniques, and practices.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of the specialized procedures applied and equipment used in the area which assigned.
  • Must have knowledge of medications, their proper dosage, and expected results.
  • Must have ability to coordinate and supervise the nursing functions in an effective manner.
  • Must have ability to maintain an empathetic attitude toward residents and to gain their confidence to work with them effectively.
  • Must have ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, which may be of a technical nature, in the English language.
  • Must have ability to recognize and identify symptoms and to make decisions quickly in emergencies.
  • Must be able to train subordinates in work procedures and to organize and direct training carried out by staff.
  • Must possess the ability to positively interact with staff, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the public.

PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:

This is medium to occasionally heavy work requiring a combination of sitting, walking, bending, reaching overhead, climbing stairs, and standing. Frequent use of both upper and lower extremities necessary for ambulation and equilibrium. Frequent use of arms, hands, and fingers. Intact visual, auditory, and verbal capabilities essential. Involves pulling, pushing, moving, carrying, and lifting 75 pounds using proper body mechanics. Performs repetitive and/or continuous tasks. Must be able to assist with resident evacuation of residents during emergencies. Performs repetitive/continuous tasks.

MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:

The ability to utilize language skills to comprehend spoken and written words effectively. Adaptable to multiple and changing priorities and frequent interruptions. Able to maintain composure and interact positively when dealing with residents, family members, staff, visitors, and government agencies. Ability to analyze and assess resident condition. Ability to function independently

WORK ENVIRONMENT FACTORS:

Location: Indoors; nursing area with linoleum/tile floors and overhead lighting.

Climatic/Atmospheric: Thermostat control located in building. Building is heated and airconditioned. Some irregularities in temperature occur. Subject to odors, fumes.

Type and Level of Noise/Vibration: Exposed to moderate level of noise due to activity of staff, residents, telephone calls, fax, and other equipment.
