Job description
The GIIN is widely recognized for providing high-quality practitioner-oriented insights into the impact investing market and state of practice, helping to bridge critical knowledge gaps facing actors across the ecosystem. Key research themes include market activity and trends, financial and impact performance, and impact measurement and management. While the GIIN conducts both qualitative and quantitative research using primary and secondary data collection methods and manages projects both in-house and via external partners, we are currently seeking a full-time Research Manager to join the Research team that can manage full project suites and programmatic activity.
The Research Manager will manage full research projects on impact performance, impact investing activity, impact measurement & management practice, and other impact investing topics, in its research and development environment. The main focus of the role includes:
- Help shape the GIIN’s research agenda by engaging in the development of programmatic strategy and pipeline that maximizes value to GIIN stakeholders and target audiences.
- Execute on this agenda by engaging in all steps of the research process – conception, design, data collection, analysis, drafting, and dissemination – in an organized, collaborative, and resourceful manner.
- Manage project team members effectively to implement the research process.
- Drive efficient completion of research projects, including by:Effectively managing projects by developing resilient workplans, delegating and empowering appropriately, and executing own responsibilities to a high standard.
Designing, and overseeing the implementation of, primary and secondary data collection methods as appropriate to the project.
Conducting, and overseeing the execution of, high quality quantitative and qualitative data analysis, including regression analysis as needed.
Building and reviewing compelling interactive data dashboards and visualizations to present research in digestible, dynamic ways.
Drafting, and overseeing the development of, engaging and compelling research reports and other output products.
- Craft multipronged dissemination plans and execute dissemination events, including presenting research insights, facilitating discussions, and engaging with stakeholders. including investors and funders in meaningful ways that can inform and influence the work of practitioners.
- Manage at least one Research Associate and support her/his professional development and success.
- Support grant development efforts, including providing inputs on proposals and drafting progress reports.
- Additional responsibilities as needed.
Location: This position will be based in our New York City office with significant remote work flexibility offered through the GIIN’s hybrid in-person/remote work model. Candidates must possess valid authorization to work in the United States that does not require employment visa sponsorship.
Compensation: The GIIN is committed to pay equity. The salary range for this role is between $61,000-$72,000, with exact salary depending on experience, with an excellent benefits package.

Basing compensation on someone’s willingness and ability to negotiate or on their prior salary leads to wide inequities and bias in how people are paid, particularly for groups experiencing historical oppression. We determine the best possible salary offer based on relevant experience and extent to which candidates demonstrate the competencies for the role during the entire hiring process. The GIIN also uses our annual performance evaluation process at the end of each year to determine raises and promotions.
Qualifications
The Manager must be an analytical, organized, resourceful, and responsible individual with a high degree of professionalism. The Manager must also be adaptive, collaborative, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, with an ability to manage projects and people.
Requirements:
- Strong conviction that investment capital can effectively address social and environmental challenges, and strong conviction that data can help impact investors make more informed decisions.
- A sound understanding of, and interest in, the world of investing and capital markets, including the roles and interests of different investor types.
- At least five years of work experience in a relevant field: (impact) investing, capital market advisors, data analytics, management consulting, impact measurement, practitioner-oriented business/investing research.
- At least a Bachelor’s degree (but an advanced degree is preferable) in a related field (e.g. Business, Statistics, Economics, Finance, International Development, Policy).
- High quality fundamental research skills, including the ability to conduct rigorous data analysis (including determining analytical/statistical methods and structuring data), interpreting and synthesizing statistical results, and to write high quality reports that effectively communicate complex ideas (although not required, we have a strong preference for quantitative strength to conduct advanced regression analysis).
- Strong quantitative skills in Microsoft Excel and familiarity in managing relational databases (familiarity with SQL preferred).
- A demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, requiring the ability to seamlessly multi-task, prioritize and adapt management style to suit the circumstances.
- Success with both executing research and overseeing execution by others, including via managing project teams across organizations and time zones.
- Experience managing highly driven and ambitious direct reports towards success by providing appropriate levels of independence, guidance, and coaching.
- The ability to represent the Research Team and the GIIN with, and to cultivate and manage relationships with, high-level stakeholders in the impact investing ecosystem.
- Personable, engaging presence, with diplomacy, tact, and good humor.
