Job Summary: Utilizes the nursing process as the frame of reference for practice as a professional registered nurse and provides direct nursing care to patients and families.

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Perioperative Nurse Entry Program (PNEP) provides preparation and education to Registered Nurses who wish to begin or transition their practice to the operating room. Eligible Nurses are either recent graduates or those previously employed in non-OR nursing positions. New graduate nurses from a college/university with a BSN and BIDMC employed CN IIs with a BSN, ADN or Diploma in Nursing are able to apply. The 9-month program consists of strategic and innovative approaches to utilize instructive and autonomous on-line learning, simulation, as well as concurrent clinical practice in the operating room with a dedicated preceptor. Nurses learn the foundational skills of perioperative nursing using AORN Periop-101™ resulting in validation of 26 specific fundamental skills. The scheduled start date for the PNEP Fall 2023 Session is August 28, 2023.

HIRING TIMELINE:
The positions will be available for applications through 11:59 PM, May 24th, 2023. Your cover letter should clearly articulate your interest or experience in the Operating Room. This event is by invitation only and is an interactive interview with clinical staff and leaders and therefore attendance is essential.

WORK SCHEDULING INFORMATION:
Entry into the program requires a two-year commitment. Those in the PNEP program work 8-hour shifts, 40 hours/wk. for at least the first year. Shift schedules are subject to change as you join the respective OR clinical team and are determined by your Nursing Director based on patient and staffing needs. Operating Room staff takes call and must arrive at the medical center within 30 minutes.

Candidates selected for the Perioperative Nurse Entry Program will practice in one of our three Operating Room Suites.

OR East Campus consists of 20 operating rooms caring for patients undergoing gynecology, general surgery, urology, oncology, orthopedics (general, total joints and sports medicine), ophthalmology, robotics, interventional pulmonology, ENT and plastic surgery procedures.

OR West Campus consists of 10 operating rooms caring for Inpatient Level I Trauma Surgery as well as patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical procedures including bariatric, neurosurgery, ENT, orthopedic trauma, spine, major plastic reconstruction, robotic surgery, and kidney and liver transplants.

Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) Operating Room consists of 10 operating rooms caring for patients undergoing highly complex cardiac, vascular/endovascular, and thoracic surgery procedures. The CVI OR has two state-of-the-art Endovascular Suites and one Hybrid Cardiac OR.

Job Description: Essential Responsibilities:
Provides direct care to patients and makes necessary nursing judgments. Responsible for systematically assessing the health care needs of individuals or groups and for the formulation of a care plan, its implementation and evaluation. Demonstrates the ability for decision making by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical experience in caring for patients.
Coordinates the care of patients and directs assistive personnel in order to provide safe, effective, efficient, equitable and timely, patient-centered care. Demonstrates initial awareness of environmental forces on health care of patients and their families. .
Develops a collegial and collaborative relationship with other health professionals to determine healthcare needs of patients and families. Learns to develop relationships with patients and families that maintain and communicate trust and respect. Communicates effectively in the exchange of information. Begins to demonstrate the ability to act as a patient advocate
Maintains annual mandatory education requirements, which include emergency skills and unit based competencies. Identifies needs for continued growth and development in conjunction with the unit based educator or clinical nurse specialist.
Demonstrates a commitment to patients, staff, and to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The individual nursing practice reflects the goals of the Medical Center. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own nursing practice and patient safety

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Nursing required.
License Registered Nurse required., and Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required.
0-1 years related work experience required.
American Heart Association - Basic Life Support Certificate
Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Age based Competencies:
Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Neonatal: Birth to 6 months, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.

Physical Nature of the Job:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
