Definition

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for the collection and disposal of refuse within an assigned area; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

Collects refuse from curb or alley by safely depositing containers, bags, or bulk items into truck hopper; closes lid and returns container to original location;

Identifies non-collectible refuse items and notifies proper personnel for removal;

Operates packer and ejector blades in order to pack and dump refuse;

Assists refuse collection vehicle driver by directing with hand signals or warning of approaching objects when backing or operating in narrow spaces;

Removes spilled refuse from collection site using a broom, rake, or shovel;

Cleans packer and ejector blades with broom or rake to remove refuse at end of shift;

Communicates with the public to notify them of improperly prepared refuse items; responds to requests for information and refers them to proper personnel when necessary;

Collects and disposes of dead animals when assigned to animal patrol;

Prepares or completes forms and paperwork as needed;

May utilize a mobile device to get directions and locate addresses with mapping software, receive messages and communicate with supervisors, and input refuse collection exceptions and other related data.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a valid driver's license.
