Job summary
The Technical Product Owner serves as liaison between engineering, product management, and collaborators for one or more teams and is accountable for leading all aspects of roadmap creation, backlog management, and feature and epic refinement. The Technical Product Owner is knowledgeable in Scrum, DevOps, and other Agile practices. They are encouraged to support the organization’s digital transformation strategy to development processes by playing a role to implement the tactics associated with that vision. Technical Product Owners work closely with stakeholders to scope and define functional and non-functional requirements and deliver quality, value features and components that align with business and technology goals. Products in the portfolio are sophisticated, enterprise platform solutions where the end user is often an engineer or a platform component. The Technical Product Owner makes decisions that reflect a detailed understanding of business standards and compliance guardrails to achieve key results. Responsible for influencing project and program cutoffs, relying on key performance indicators (KPIs) to set feasible delivery achievements and dates.

Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Partners with product management and system architecture to bring together feature requests, use cases, proof-of-concept requests, and holistically define success criteria for each.
  • Builds and handles key artifacts and agile backlog items such as requirements documents, epics, stories, features, technical enablers, technical debt, release notes, etc.
  • Drives cross-team and cross-functional teamwork throughout sprints to enable timely user story development, refinement, testing, user validation, and release, supplies to roadblocks resolution and any related decision-making. Effectively motivates in agile processes and ceremonies, including daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives, as well as participating in testing, training, and organizational change activities, as needed.
  • Supports scrum masters in assessing the experience of the team and implementing any agreed upon processes that encourages the team.
  • Provides regular and ad hoc progress updates and contributes to stakeholder communication and reporting.
  • Leads changes to features or components and ensures there is a clear indication of what is in scope for each release.
  • Acts as a single point of contact for requests for the agile team’s support and services; acts as a proxy and prioritizes needs, routes requests to correct owners and engages various agile teams as needed to facilitate communication.
  • Schedules regular refinement sessions and works with the agile team to estimate and break down epics into useful product backlog items in support of release goals and program cadences.
  • Schedule technical spikes or architectural changes ahead of dependent functional commitments in the product roadmap.
  • Serves as technical subject matter expert during strategic product planning and story mapping.
  • Effectively engaged and participates in events to exchange information, develop new skills, advance proven experience, and mentor team members (i.e., Brownbag/Lunch & Learn Sessions)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Supervisory responsibilities
  • No formal supervisory responsibilities in this position. Provides informal assistance such as technical guidance, mentorship, and/or training to co-workers. May coordinate and assign tasks to co-workers within the Agile Management vertical or on a special project.

Qualifications

Education and experience
Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) or equivalent from four-year college or university in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related degree plus a minimum of 3+ years of related work experience. Shown experience with managing teams and/or products in an agile environment is highly preferred. Design thinking experience a plus.

Certificates and/or licenses
Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) and SAFe Product Owner (POPM) certifications are highly preferred.

Communication skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal and analytical abilities. Ability to provide efficient, timely, reliable, and gallant support to stakeholders. Ability to optimally present information.
Reasoning ability
Ability to research, comprehend, analyze, and interpret sophisticated documents accurately. Ability to solve problems involving several options in situations. Requires advanced analytical and quantitative skills. Ability to solve problems of moderate complexity.

Other Skills and/or Abilities
Sophisticated skills in Microsoft Office 365 suite applications. Excellent project management and organizational skills to assist in leading multiple partners and operational tasks. Seeking a self-starter, highly motivated, able to shift directions quickly when priorities change. Ability to establish relationships with senior technical and business stakeholders.
