Description

The Process Design Engineer interfaces with all departments throughout the refinery including operations, maintenance, planning, and technical services. Uses technical expertise to achieve operational and project objectives by working to design, implement, control and optimize new and existing processes at Sweeny Refinery. By partnering with internal and external stakeholders, the Process Engineer collaborates to execute projects around business improvement opportunities, safety enhancements, and sustainability while reducing cost and maximizing profitability. Process Design Engineering functions as unit operations engineering on a situational basis to aid monitoring and optimization of operational units.

Responsibilities May Include

Participates and promotes all aspects of refinery safety programs. Visibly demonstrates commitment to the workplace safety and health of employees and contractors through personal engagement and sound decisions.

Works as a member of the technical team to provide process engineering support for operations

Interface with multidiscipline teams (operation, safety, environmental, supervision, etc.) to identify problem statements and process goals for small and large projects.

Aid planning and execution of field test for equipment performance verifications.

Performs unit optimization, troubleshooting, de-bottlenecking studies

Participates in safety initiatives including risk assessments and PHA reviews of assigned units and projects

Supports on-going reliability improvements and equipment strategy development

Generates ideas / opportunities for projects that improve the safety, reliability, performance and profitability of the refinery. Assists in the development of process design packages.

Deliver process specifications, P&ID’s and equipment data sheets for projects

Support post-startup auditing of executed projects.

When required, provides technical advice and support to daily operational issues and to meet short- and long-term operating and business plans of operating unit.

When required, monitors and evaluates unit performance and maintains effective monitoring reports

Required Qualifications

Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering

Currently hold a valid driver’s license

Fresh graduates, or with up to 5 years of relevant process engineering/design experience in the petrochemical / chemical / refinery industry

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering

Driver of creativity, innovation, and continuous improvement

Personally committed to continuous learning and ongoing self-development

Strong oral/written communication skills and the ability to interact and work in a team environment

Ability to multi-task, manage multiple interfaces and prioritize work

Knowledge of simulation programs such as HTRI, PetroSim, Aspen HYSYS, ProII and/or AspenPlus

Familiarity with H&MB, PFD / P&IDs and design specification of process equipment

Knowledge of industry standards and practices related to process design and safety

The Sweeny Refinery is located in Old Ocean, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization, and aromatics units, as well as access to the on-site vacuum tower and delayed coking unit, which is an asset owned by Phillips 66 Partners. Sweeny processes heavy, high-sulfur crude oil and some light, low sulfur crude oil. Domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil is transported by truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, heating oil and petroleum coke. The refinery receives crude oil by pipeline and via tankers, through terminals on the Gulf Coast, including a deepwater terminal at Freeport. Refined products are distributed throughout the Midcontinent region, southeastern and eastern United States by pipeline, barge and rail car. Refined products are also exported to Latin America by waterborne cargo.
