It’s what inspires us to create meaningful solutions – the kind that make a real difference – when it matters most.

The world and our customers’ needs are changing faster than ever before and while we are proud of what we do already, we know we can do more. That’s why we need you, to help us tackle increasingly complex challenges posed by ever evolving health and well-being needs.

In this role, you have the opportunity to make life better

Looking at the challenges the world is facing today Philips’ purpose has never been more relevant. So, whatever your role, if you share our passion for helping others, you’ll be working towards creating a better and fairer future for all.

As a Principal Scientist focused on computational modeling, you will lead efforts to understand and guide the design and development of medical devices. This role includes foundational work to drive early design strategies through creation of data for support of regulatory submissions. This position supports the Image Guided Therapy Devices business.

You are responsible for

  • Designing and detailing computational approaches to extract insights about product performance, manufacturing operations, mechanism of action, and interaction with tissue for IGTD and competitive medical devices.

  • Using these insights, in collaboration with others in product development, to drive design choices, solve problems, and educate internal and external stakeholders.

  • Coaching less experienced team members in best practices of component and system design.

  • Utilizing product knowledge and understanding to look for solutions beyond current status quo.

  • Providing guidance on test protocols, conduct tests, analyze data, and report results.

  • Successfully interacting and at times leading conversations with associates in other departments, such as Marketing, Manufacturing Operations, Procurement, and engineering staff to achieve project and product objectives.

  • Developing new test methods and tools as necessary.

  • Providing expertise on the appropriate usage of computational modeling to drive understanding of key technical challenges.

You are part of

The Image Guided Therapy Devices R&D team. This team develops products to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease (both arterial and deep venous), and other non-vascular aspects of heart disease. The current product portfolio includes IVUS catheters, physiology wires, nitinol implants, balloons, specialty balloons, laser atherectomy catheters, and mechanical atherectomy catheters.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need a customer-first attitude and the following

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical, Plastics, Biomedical, Applied Math, or related technical discipline from an accredited university program.

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in the design and development of products. Significant experience in medical devices or other regulated industries highly desired.

  • Ability to document requirements, models, assumptions, and designs.

  • Ability to effectively utilize both empirical and theoretical methods to solve complex problems.

  • Comprehensive knowledge in the use of computational models to drive design choices and problem solving with respect to linear and non-linear physical problems.

  • Experience with CFD / FEA analysis of nitinol parts, injection molded and extruded plastic parts, multi-layer metal/plastic assemblies, fatigue performance evaluation, and tissue/blood interactions highly desired.

  • Experience with Abaqus with both linear and non-linear mechanical problems is a must have; experience with other analytical software programs (e.g., MSC Marc) & work with hyperelastic or shape-memory materials highly desired.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering and scientific principles to solve problems.

US work authorization is a precondition of employment. The company will not consider candidates who require sponsorship for a work-authorized visa.

Company relocation benefits will not be provided for this position. For this position, you will reside in or within commuting distance to Plymouth, MN.

In return, we offer you

Sharpen your talents with new challenges in our dynamic organization. As a market-driven company, we’re used to listening to our customers & apply the same thinking to our employees. How we work at Philips

Our newly adopted hybrid work concept fuses flexibility with collaboration to deliver great outcomes for our people and our customers. We are embracing an approach wherein we spend more time together than apart – which for full-time employees translates to an average of at least 3 days working from the office and up to 2 days from home – for our hybrid roles.

Hybrid work flexibility means people can meet the changing demands of work and home in the most balanced, productive, and healthy way.

Our hybrid working model is defined in 3 ways:

We believe in the importance of impactful collaboration: There's a certain energy when everyone’s in the same room that can heighten idea generation and creative friction needed for problem-solving.

We embrace flexibility: Choosing where, when, and how to work can vary according to task and team schedules. Flexibility isn’t office or online, it means choosing the space that works best for you, your teams, and our customers on a case-by-case basis.

We want to be at our best: The way we work, and our workspaces are designed to support our well-being, offer career advancement opportunities, and enable us to be at our best.
