The team you'll be part of
Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards, and numerous other awards.
Nokia Bell Labs NAR (Network Architecture Research) Lab drives innovations across multiple network layers and across all network segments, including access, metro, transport, and data centers. The research is expected to identify new opportunities for monetization, sustainability, performance improvement, and our customers’ total cost-of-ownership optimization. We are looking for a strong and enthusiastic candidate to join an excellent research lab.
What you will learn and contribute to
We are looking for a passionate innovation-oriented principal architect, eager to develop a deep understanding of industry trends and novel architecture and technology roadmaps to shape the future of networks. The research will anticipate paradigm shifts like cloudified networks, programmable networking, and new deployment models, such as network as a service.
As part of our team, you will:
Develop and define novel network architecture solutions through in-depth knowledge in at least one of the following networking domains: access, core, and transport as well as cross-domain expertise
Effectively identify emerging trends, translate these into research projects and spearhead disruptive research topics to drive network architecture innovation
Spearhead effective transfers to business groups and contribute to strategy definitions through a sound sense for synthesis; abstract high-level architectural concepts from details while also recognizing and prioritizing essential architectural details that need to be addressed.
Protect the generated intellectual property by patents, contribute to the implementation of patents in standards, and review inventions from others.
Define frameworks for developing evaluation methodologies and network models to perform end-to-end network simulations using, e.g., C++ or Python.
Your skills and experience
Ph.D. degree in a relevant engineering field such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics from a prominent college/university or Master's Degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience in an industrial research center
Ability to work unsupervised on complex research issues and interact with other researchers to drive an effective transfer of concepts and solutions to business groups.
Skilled domain knowledge in one or multiple areas: optical/IP/fixed/mobile networks and/or in-depth cross-domain networking knowledge
Ability to visualize and present complex architectures to senior management and customers.
It would be nice if you also had the following:
Knowledge of analytics and machine learning methods is a plus.
Eagerness to define and build proof-of-concept systems for real and run experiments with first movers
Infrastructure architecture experience in one or multiple areas: Multi-Cloud (AWS, Azure), Network, Security, Automation, Orchestration, Edge, CI/CD solutions, MLOps, etc.
