Job Title: Preschool Teacher

Reports to: Director,

Minimum Qualifications: At least 18 years of age; meet licensing requirements for Teacher qualifications plus one year of experience prefered working with children. Willing to complete CDA credential/MN Child Care credential within first year of employment to meet licensing, Parent Aware requirements. Preferred qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field, Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education or CDA with three years of experience working with children prefered .

Salary Range: Based on experience.

Job Purpose: To provide a healthy, safe, and developmentally appropriate program and environment where children have the opportunity to develop social-emotional, language, intellectual and physical skills. Respect and support the family in its efforts to raise their children to become well-become well-rounded individuals.

Essential Duties or Tasks:

  • Lead Teacher is responsible for directing and supervising personnel in your assigned classroom and any classroom you may float to.
  • Lead Teacher is responsible for the safety of all children and staff at all times.
  • Supervise children at all times by sight and sound.
  • Develop a warm and nurturing relationship with all children and parents.
  • Observe children closely enough to be aware of any changes in behavior and health.
  • Understand and use positive behavior techniques that help each child to develop the ability to be self-disciplined.
  • Enforce all safety rules of the center according to the policy manual; understand and implement, as needed, emergency procedures for fire, storm, medical, first aid, CPR, etc.
  • Promote good hygiene through appropriate hand washing, diapering and sanitation techniques according to the policy manual.
  • Operate the classroom in compliance with all child care licensing standards and those of our partnering organizations and agencies.
  • Plan, prepare and implement weekly lesson plans with activities that are both age and individually appropriate using the center curriculum as its foundation.
  • Promote language development through storytelling, music, conversation, book reading and pretend play.
  • Organize a classroom environment that is conducive to appropriate behavior and learning for the age of the group.
  • Provide a calm, pleasant, interactive experience for the children during all meals.
  • Write and compile anecdotal monthly observations and formal, semi-annual assessments for each child and maintain portfolios that include work samples.
  • Prepare for and communicate with parents during semi-annual parent-teacher conferences; participate in any additional conferences requested by the center or parents.
  • Provide regular, ongoing, positive communication with parents, according to the expectations for the age group including, but not limited to, daily or weekly written and verbal reports.
  • Develop and maintain accurate, detailed and neat records of accidents, illnesses, incidents, medication, attendance, observations, assessments, conferences or any other record requested by the center.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, healthy and attractive classroom environment according to the standards set forth in the policy manual; quickly wipe up spills to avoid accidents.
  • Attend staff meetings, parent events and in-house trainings both during and after regular center hours as required for this position.
  • Attend and complete all licensing trainings requirements within the time frame set forth by the State.
  • Attend additional workshops, training and continuing education classes as determined in the individualized training plan.
  • Assist in training substitutes, assistants, floaters, volunteers or others who may be permanently or temporarily assigned to the classroom.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to all policies set forth in the Parent Handbook, the Staff Handbook and the Policy Manual.

Other Duties and Tasks:

  • Contribute to the center’s general appearance and condition; notify the director of any facility problems.
  • Notify the director when supplies are low or toys and materials are broken.
  • Arrive at work on time with minimal absences.
  • Answer the telephone in a pleasant, professional manner.
  • Participate in all program evaluations.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

  • Safety lift small children up to thirty pounds.
  • Bend, stoop and kneel to children’s level.
  • Sit on the floor and child-sized chairs.
  • Stand for extended periods of time.
  • Withstand periods of time in the sun and heat outside.
  • Write notes, newsletter articles, etc., in Standard English.
