Job description
The overall goal of this project is to increase access to food for low-income students and their families at Boulder and Basin Elementary Schools by creating a public forest garden system and developing educational lessons on food for the afterschool program. The Boulder community has a population of 1,033 and a poverty rate of 15.9%, about double the rate in Helena just 26 miles to the north, and higher than the State of MT (11.9%). Basin’s youth poverty rate (24%) is almost double the poverty rate for the State of MT (14%). Boulder is a small, rural community with many service jobs. Generational poverty is common. Parents often commute to Helena or Butte for work. Boulder Elementary School is a school-wide Title I school and has a free and reduced lunch rate of 44%, and Basin has 100% of students on free and reduced lunch. This project will help develop a sustainable food forest for the Boulder community, which will increase food sovereignty and positive health outcomes. This VISTA project will move the Boulder and Basin adult and youth population out of poverty by building knowledge of self-sustainability through perennial-based food systems, resulting in a public food forest system that provides food, seeds, plans, and education for the community. **Housing provided! Located in Boulder, MT.
