O.E. DuRant, Inc, a subsidiary of Moran Towing Corporation, has an opportunity available in the position of Line Boat Deckhand (”Deckhand”). This position primarily consists of handling lines on line boats, piers, and docks on Company property, private property, federal and state-restricted property, and on inland waters. The Deckhand is responsible for the safe and efficient mooring and/or unmooring of foreign and domestic vessels.

The Deckhand reports directly to the Captain of the Line Boat.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited, to:

  • Be fully conversant with, and always work according to, the Company’s Safety Management System.
  • Report unsafe situations immediately as well as opportunities for improvement to the Captain.
  • Assist the Captain in pre-sail safety checks and routine inspections of the vessel’s safety equipment.
  • Run lines to make vessel fast to the berth or turn loose for the vessel to set sail, either manually or under line boat power.
  • Deliver pallets or goods via launch service to vessels.
  • Assist in the transfer of cargo when necessary and as directed by the Captain.
  • Ensure safe, smooth operations by always being aware of surroundings, including paying attention to the safety of the ship’s crew as much as paying attention to the safety of yourself and others on your vessel.
  • Help with maintenance tasks, equipment checks, or any other duties assigned by the Captain.
  • Communicate accurate, timely information in a professional manner with own crew, terminal employees, and visiting vessel crews.
  • Maintain and protect all property in excellent condition.
  • Act as the lookout as required.
  • Demonstrate thorough familiarity with the vessel’s equipment.
  • Carry out vessel and equipment cleaning post job, as well as maintenance duties when assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Strong background in marine environment, with experience on commercial vessels preferred.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude for operating vessel/machinery/equipment.
  • Ability to read, speak and understand English over radiotelephone and/or radio.
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record are required and must be maintained during employment. Incumbent must adhere to the requirements of the Company’s Driver Safety Policy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of using cargo information cards and material safety data sheets.
  • Basic computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Must demonstrate, or be willing to learn, basic seamanship skills and knowledge, e.g. splicing, rigging, lifting, etc.
  • Demonstrated organizational and written and verbal communication skills for effective teamwork.
  • Demonstrated good judgment for effective problem solving.
  • Ability and willingness to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours, including taking call outs and working weekends, holidays, and at nights.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to:

  • Climb ladders as well as board and disembark boats safely.
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Frequently reach with hands and arms.
  • Work safely and navigate in a marine setting.
  • Speak, hear and see (close vision and color vision).
  • Occasionally crouch or stoop.
  • Frequently lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs.
  • Hear and respond to verbal communication in noisy environments such as piers, docks, and warehouses with moving heavy equipment.
  • Withstand exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, rain, cold and or/humidity.
