Job Responsibilities:

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina is seeking to fill a Grounds Horticulture Specialist in the Facilities & Engineering Department. Under the supervision of the Grounds shop head and Assistant shop head; this position shall supervise and perform various grounds related tasks using related equipment.

  • Responsible for the continuing development, and maintenance of campus flowerbeds.
  • Responsible for maintenance and propagation of plants in a large greenhouse.
  • Assist in the preparation of college special events, to include plant displays.
  • Prepare and process supply requests for greenhouse and campus plant requirements.
  • Operate various grounds equipment to accomplish grounds maintenance and clean up requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

An Associate Degree in Horticulture or high school AND extensive related experience in Horticulture or landscape field. Must be able to work with minimum supervision and must have the ability to work well and communicate effectively with a wide range of people and be able to interact with senior staff and faculty of the college providing good customer service.

Must possess a valid SC Drivers license. Must be able to use herbicides and fertilizers and possess state chemical spraying license or be able to obtain one in six months. Required to operate various types of grounds equipment, light or medium weight trucks to pick up and deliver materials and supplies for grounds maintenance and campus cleanup. Have the knowledge of work methods, equipment and procedures to assure health and safety standards and precautions are in compliance with state DHEC and federal OSHA requirements.

  • Will be responsible for supervising campus daily cleanups to ensure that the campus maintains a clean, pleasant and safe environment for students, faculty, staff and guests of the college.
  • Will be responsible for the upkeep and oversight of an assigned zone and will insure that work requests from appropriate supervisors are completed in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Must be able to work of an assigned crew and establish and maintain effective working relationships with them.
  • Must be able to assist any special projects
  • Will assist college event set ups as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

A High School Diploma OR GED equivalent is required. Must have two(2) years of relevant experience in grounds maintenance and operating grounds related equipment to include; weed eaters, mowers and blowers required. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions. Working knowledge of grounds keeping and horticultural practices. Ability to supervise the work of other employees. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with crew and other grounds personnel. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to make minor adjustments/repairs to grounds related equipment.

Employee must possess a valid SC driver’s license OR be able to obtain one within 30 days of hire. Employee must be able to stoop, kneel, bend and lift heavy objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds. Employee must be able to perform all related job duties in all weather conditions. Some weekend work mandatory. Will be scheduled when possible. Employee must be self-motivated and be able to work under limited supervision. Employee must be or become familiar with all related grounds equipment used in department. Employee must possess Citadel approved fork lift certification within 90 days of hire, or as training is available. Employee must be aerial lift certified within six months of hire, or as training is available.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $36,000.00 - $380,000.00 per year
