JOB DESCRIPTION:
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibility of this position is to charge furnaces with iron in accordance to charge sheet specifications and quality standards. The individual must be able to work under minimal supervision. Responsibilities cited below are considered essential job functions:
  • Adhere to established safety procedures and 5 “ S ” standards (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain the cycle) required to perform daily duties in this position, including the proper techniques used in lifting/moving of parts
  • Back charge furnaces; operate overhead crane with a magnet to transfer steel, pig iron, and returns into the furnace regularly
  • Interpret electrical panels, monitor the temperature of iron and make necessary adjustments to the furnace as needed
  • Place additives (carbon, silicon, iron pyrites, etc.) in furnace as directed by charge sheets
  • Slag off the furnace when needed by using a skimmer and/or rake to remove the impurities
  • Maintain record of furnace readings as directed (approximately every 3 hours), record iron temperatures on the casting of the furnace shell and power readings from electrical control gauges
  • Tap furnace and transfer iron as needed
  • Responsible for all pour backs in furnaces
  • Clean and repair ladles as required
  • Perform furnace maintenance such as hot patching, desulfurizing, etc. (this normally is on off-shift hours)
  • Strictly observe safety rules and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned; required being very flexible in their daily job assignments
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Communication skills, ability to read, write and comprehend instruction
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, walk, reach frequently throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift items up to 50 lbs. without assistance
  • Manual dexterity
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Knowledge of shop mathematics, i.e. decimals and fractions
  • Ability to drive a forklift and use an overhead crane
EDUCATION & MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
Preferred one year in a manufacturing environment with demonstrated ability to interpret and comprehend plans and/or process sheets; Foundry experience with an understanding of chemistry preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
General shop and machine tool noise, dirt, sand, grease, extreme heat, high temperatures and fumes from the operation of machines and equipment.
Normal working position is standing, walking stooping and bending through out the plant.
Some repetitive lifting/moving is required, depending on the daily assignment or tasks being performed.
Physical ability to wear respirator and safety equipment required.
The weight can range anywhere from 1 to 100 lbs. in which proper lifting/moving techniques are required.
WORKING HOURS;
Monday-Friday 2pm-10pm
