Our Marine Services group is looking for a Field Technician to join their team!
The Field Technician is responsible for attending ocean going vessels and performing field analyses and environmental sample collection in accordance with maritime environmental rules. The Field Technician will predominantly attend ships while at the dock but will also attend ships at other ports in North America and globally. The Field Technician should be comfortable in industrial areas such as ships and shipyards, should be familiar with sampling protocols and scientific analysis or be willing to quickly learn. The role involves attending many ships each week, sometimes with a large amount of equipment. The right candidate will be an independent, highly conscientious self-starter who strictly follows all standard operating procedures for sample collection, field monitoring, sample preservation, and safety.
Job Functions
- Attends ships at the dock to perform sample collection and field measurements in accordance with maritime environmental compliance rules for drinking water, wastewater, ballast water, bilge water, indoor air quality, exhaust smoke emissions, etc.
- Coordinates with ship’s crews and other stakeholders to organize their own schedule of sample collection and field measurement events.
- Sometimes rides at sea with the ship to perform sampling and measurements.
- Some domestic and international travel for internal training or to attend ships.
- With support of the SGS Technical team, quickly builds and maintains expertise in several new technical field services each year.
- With support of the SGS Technical team, quickly builds and maintains expertise in ship design and ship equipment.
- Maintains sampling and measurement equipment, including consumables and replacement parts.
- Completes all required training to perform responsibilities in compliance with regulatory guidelines
- Strictly follows all procedures for sample collection, field monitoring, sample preservation, and safety.
- Provides regular feedback for improvement of processes and procedures.
- Documents all field activities in an accurate and detailed manner.
- Troubleshoots issues with treatment systems and equipment onboard ships.
- Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external clients.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent AND one (1) year of relevant experience (Required)
- College Degree or equivalent work experience in chemistry, biology, engineering, maritime policy, environmental science, or related field in maritime, engineering, or industrial application (Preferred)
- Ability to understand basic chemistry and biology (Required)
- Ability to master sample collection methods for water and air (Required)
- Valid Driver's License (Required)
- TWIC card eligibility (Required)
- Basic English language skills (Required)
- Basic mathematical skills (Required)
- Strong customer service skills (Required)
- Basic computer skills (Required)
- Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl frequently (Required)
- Ability to handle and work in extreme temperatures (Required)
- Ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull upwards of 50+ lbs on a frequent basis (Required)
