Position: Executive Associate Dean of Health Sciences and Pharmacy

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

The Executive Associate Dean of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (EAD-HSP) provides oversight of the activities of the Office of the Dean. Reporting directly to the Dean, the EAD-HSP works with the Dean’s direct-reporting team to accomplish the mission of the HSP academic unit. The EAD-HSP generally works behind the scenes to solve problems, mediate disputes, and deal with issues before they are brought to the Dean.

In support of the Dean, the EAD-HSP is responsible for coordinating the overall functioning and performance of Health Sciences and Pharmacy (HSP) programs, providing day-to-day leadership and direction with respect to policies, practices, systems, and operations in the HSP unit. The EAD-HSP is responsible for ensuring the HSP unit provides quality educational programs, a robust research portfolio, and an engaged faculty in service to the unit, campus, community, and the respective faculty professions.

Essential Job Functions:
These consist of the following domains: Administration and Service; Teaching; and Scholarship.

Administration and Service (85%)

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and oversight of operations as directed by the Dean.
  • Manage flow of issues, projects, and problems with the Office of the Dean.
  • Represent the Dean, when necessary.
  • Exercise independent analysis and judgement in prioritizing situations requiring attention and take steps to ensure strategic and operational priorities progress in a timely fashion.
  • Proactively identify information that has a potential to be impactful and elevate issues to the Dean, along with options for resolution in a timely way.
  • Assist with all executive searches in the HSP unit and participate in the hiring of relevant faculty and senior staff.
  • Assist department chairs as they work to recruit and retain faculty.
  • Assist department chairs as necessary in the annual faculty evaluation process and addresses questions.
  • Work closely with department chairs and program directors to ensure programmatic coordination and communication regarding resource allocation, policy development, quality assurance, accreditation standards and personnel issues.
  • As needed, and in consultation with the University Office of Academic Affairs, develop, review and update guidelines and timelines for promotion and tenure, hiring, faculty annual reviews, and other faculty affairs matters, working with the Faculty Executive Committee (FEC) and Faculty Affairs Committee (FAC) as appropriate.
  • Ensure that HSP policies and procedures are consistent with University policies and procedures.
  • Maintain knowledge of current, relevant professional accreditation standards pertaining to all externally accredited HSP academic programs.
  • Work with program directors whose programs are externally accredited by specialty accreditation bodies (ASCEND, CAPTE, CCNE, and CAATE), including Nutrition and Nutrigenomics (NGx), Physical Therapy (DPT), Nursing (BSN) and Athletic Training (MAT), to ensure their respective programs meet (or exceed) the expectations and standards set forth by the accrediting body.
  • Ensure HSP academic programs remain compliant with all relevant accrediting and professional licensing bodies, in collaboration with the Director of Assessment, Office of Graduate and Professional Education, Office of Experiential Education, and relevant program directors.
  • Work with all stakeholders to ensure the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Program meets (or exceeds) the expectations and standards set forth by Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) in order to maintain accreditation.
  • Collaborate with institutional offices to achieve institution-wide goals in assessment and accreditation efforts and work with all relevant stakeholders to ensure HSP academic programs meet (or exceed) the expectations and standards set forth by the Higher Learning Commission.
  • Provide strategic oversight of faculty participation in committees and student organizations to ensure equitable consistent and timely representation across the HSP unit.
  • Establishes and implements short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures for the HSP unit; monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effect changes required for improvement.
  • In partnership with the Assistant/Associate Dean of Graduate and Professional Education, provides vision and leadership for development of new academic programs. Works collaboratively to expand academic programming, including online and interdisciplinary programs to support Manchester’s mission.
  • Foster a culture of diversity and inclusion within Health Sciences and Pharmacy.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships, work cooperatively and collegially with others in a manner consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect.
  • Assist in the development and lead the implementation of the HSP Strategic Plan.
  • Evaluate and recommend allocation and use of space for all HSP academic programs. Resolve all space issues, working closely with University facilities personnel and department chairs. Work with the Dean to identify and procure additional space as needed.
  • Support the Assistant/Associate Dean of Pharmacy Admissions and Alumni Engagement and academic program directors in HSP alumni engagement activities.
  • Lead the creation, continuous quality improvement review, distribution, and communication of the Health Sciences and Pharmacy Annual Report.
  • Actively contribute to HSP’s success as a member of the HSP Pharmacy Executive Committee.

Teaching (10 % - the equivalent of teaching/coordinating about 3 credit-hours per year)

  • Provides quality instruction in courses both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Collaborates with other members of the faculty to develop the curriculum, and teaching and evaluation methods needed for effective delivery of that curriculum. This includes creating, developing, and evaluating innovative teaching methods that prepare students for professional practice.
  • As appropriate, develops and teaches courses in health sciences and pharmacy academic programs.
  • Is an exemplary professional role model for staff, students and faculty colleagues.

Scholarship (5%)

  • Leads and participates in the scholarship of discovery, application, integration, and teaching appropriate for the individual’s discipline and interests.
  • Disseminates the results of scholarly endeavors in appropriate forums, including publications, presentations, and teaching.
  • As appropriate, mentors and collaborates with internal and external scholars.


Secondary Job Functions

  • At the direction of the Dean, lead the accreditation process for our specialty accredited programs.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • A commitment to fostering an environment of diversity and inclusion among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Advanced degree in a health sciences field, preferably one of the programs represented here, and academic and professional accomplishments that are sufficient to merit appointment (at the time of hire) at the rank of full professor.
  • Significant administrative experience in higher education, 5 or more years preferred.
  • Experience planning and building academic programs.
  • Experience managing complex budgets.
  • Knowledge of and experience with external accreditation processes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Effective presentation skills.
  • Ability to provide effective feedback and coaching.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines, and manage time.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Basic computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail, and internet use.
  • Commitment to continuous self-improvement and professional development.
  • Understanding of current health sciences and pharmacy education and practice is preferred.
  • Record of scholarly activity is preferred.
