This full-time, grant-funded position will provide epidemiology support for the Overdose Data to Action grant, fulfilling deliverables including characterizing risk factors and outcomes, identifying disparities, running analyses of large data sets, and producing reports and data visualizations related to addiction, overdose, and health-related topics. This position is also responsible for assisting program managers in CPH’s Addiction Services with program evaluation and data tools, as well as working with external partners (e.g., the Columbus & Franklin County Addiction Plan) and responding to data requests. In addition, collaboration with others in the Office of Epidemiology on other topics and projects is expected.

Preferred Experience and Training:
  • Master’s in Public Health with strong background or previous work in epidemiology, public health informatics, or public health data science.
  • Experience in data collection using electronic data gathering and storage tools (e.g. REDCap), integrating and analysis of multiple data sources, statistical analysis or equivalent data analysis environments (e.g. SAS, R), data visualization environment and creation tools (e.g. PowerBI, Tableau, R-Shiny, GIS).
  • Familiar with and with experience in substance use and substance use outcome data sources, data collection, analysis, and visualization.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to establish and keep good working relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Project management skills and highly organized with excellent attention to detail.
Under general direction, is responsible for surveillance of disease and environmental hazards and for the coordination of public health activities in the assessment and control of endemic, epidemic, and environmental incidents; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

Performs community health assessments by systemically collecting and analyzing a variety of data; assembles and disseminates accurate and reliable community health information to the public and federal, state, and local agencies;
Investigates epidemic situations of infectious or chronic diseases and related environmental health problems through field visits, surveys, and other epidemiological means to determine the cause, nature, and consequences of health problems;
Collects epidemiological data for surveillance of general health or specific diseases in the community by abstracting data from confidential medical or public health records or through survey and other epidemiological approaches;
Tabulates and analyzes epidemiological data by using appropriate statistical techniques in order to assess community health status and to detect possible disease outbreaks;
Interacts with clinical laboratory personnel, infection control specialists, physicians, nurses, and other health professionals to encourage prompt reporting of diseases and to keep them informed of current disease control and prevention strategies;
Coordinates and/or participates in epidemiological research for scientific investigations, reports, and publications;
Assists with the development of departmental policies, procedures and strategies on disease and injury prevention and control;
Assists in the enforcement of communicable disease rules and regulations, and in the establishment of quarantines;
Participates in local public health emergency preparedness planning, infrastructure building, and coordination with internal and external partners;
Coordinates and/or assists in the development and delivery of public health emergency response and epidemiological training, education, and exercises for public health and non-public health partners;
May be assigned to serve as a member of a Disaster Recovery/Business Resumption Team, Incident Response Team, or similar public health response team which may include the conduct of operations on a 24/7 basis at remote locations.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a bachelor's degree and completion of one (1) year of graduate level coursework in public health, preventive medicine, environmental sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, or other closely related coursework (thirty (30) semester/forty-five (45) quarter credit hours equals one (1) year).
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
