Position Overview
Performs difficult skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of underground and overhead lines in the electrical distribution and system.
General Responsibilities
- Repairs and maintains aerial and underground electrical distribution lines, and all associated equipment.
- Operates and maintains assigned trucks as needed; checks and keeps equipment in good operating condition, operates trenchers, track hoes, and other light, medium, and heavy equipment.
- Trims trees in and around primary and secondary lines.
- Responds to and handles a variety of electrical emergencies during and after working hours.
- Serves in the on-call rotation and responds to call-back when conditions mandate.
- Supervises the crew and conducts “tailgate meetings” in the absence of the Crew Leader; assists in training subordinate staff.
- Utilizes special testing equipment such as primary voltage and amperage indicators and primary phasing sticks, etc.
- Operates and maintains the tools used in electric distribution work.
- Performs “hot work” which includes changing poles, installing or replacing equipment,, distribution equipment maintenance, and all other distribution tasks.
- Able to connect various service voltages and transformer banks.
- Able to complete work orders and interpret construction blue prints
Qualifications
Required:
- Graduation from high school and considerable experience in electric line construction and maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
- Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license.
- Certification as a graduate of Basic Climbing school, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Lineman schools, Basic Underground School, Basic Metering school, Substation school, Transformer school and Electric Safety certification as required by the City.
- Training in Protective Grounding, Basic First Aid and AED use and Arc Flash Safety.
