Position Overview
Performs difficult skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of underground and overhead lines in the electrical distribution and system.

General Responsibilities

• Repairs and maintains aerial and underground electrical distribution lines, and all associated equipment.
• Operates and maintains assigned trucks as needed; checks and keeps equipment in good operating condition, operates trenchers, track hoes, and other light, medium, and heavy equipment.
• Trims trees in and around primary and secondary lines.
• Responds to and handles a variety of electrical emergencies during and after working hours.
• Serves in the on-call rotation and responds to call-back when conditions mandate.
• Supervises the crew and conducts “tailgate meetings” in the absence of the Crew Leader; assists in training subordinate staff.
• Utilizes special testing equipment such as primary voltage and amperage indicators and primary phasing sticks, etc.
• Operates and maintains the tools used in electric distribution work.
• Performs “hot work” which includes changing poles, installing or replacing equipment,, distribution equipment maintenance, and all other distribution tasks.
• Able to connect various service voltages and transformer banks.
• Able to complete work orders and interpret construction blue prints

Qualifications

Required:

• Graduation from high school and considerable experience in electric line construction and maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

• Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license.
• Certification as a graduate of Basic Climbing school, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Lineman schools, Basic Underground School, Basic Metering school, Substation school, Transformer school and Electric Safety certification as required by the City.
• Training in Protective Grounding, Basic First Aid and AED use and Arc Flash Safety.
