Job Title: Director of Communications
General Definition: The Director of Communications controls and oversees the flow of communication and information between the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma (ESOO) and the public. They must have excellent copywriting, marketing and public speaking skills that embody ESTOO’s core values of excellence in service. They will lead the process to enhance our brand voice through a strong social media presence utilizing a variety of marketing and economic sustainability skills through all available platforms. As the face of the organization, they will manage the communication department and represent ESTOO at media events, direct marketing, and public relations campaigns, and contributing articles to the Shooting Star our monthly newsletter. The highest level of professionalism is expected in this position.

Essential Job Functions:
· Project a positive company image to the public.
· Establish and drive a multi-channel communications strategy.
· Establish a brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms to promote a positive image.
· Establish and maintain contacts with media members, influencers and community leaders.
· Develop effective messaging and communication strategies in line with the mission of excellence established by ESTOO.
· Create and oversee the promotional and informative materials distributed to the public and needed internal communications.
· Attends speaking engagements and host special events as directed.
· Able to deliver messages through a variety of platforms and promote ESTOO effectively to a diverse customer base.
· Ensures all ESTOO materials have consistent, professional, positive messaging and branding.
· Conducts quality control on all communications.
· Develops a positive relationship with and works well with media outlets and other companies.
· Demonstrates a high level of knowledge and proficiency with communication and technology.
· Responsible for the integrity and perception of ESTOO through PR crises, and to preserve the integrity and reputation at all times.
· Contributes monthly articles to the Shooting Star our monthly newsletter.
· Able to work with and communicate effectively with people from diverse functional areas.
· Always represent the Tribe in a professional manner, when working with Tribal members, in dealing with outside entities and in situations with fellow employees.
· Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
· High School Diploma or GED required.
· Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or a related field preferred.
· An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
· Experience working in a tribal government setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Proven work experience as a Communication Director or a similar role.
· Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with communications technologies.
· Excellent speaking skills required.
· Strong customer service, and interpersonal skills required.
· Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of copywriting, graphic design, layout, and publishing with strong written communication skills.
· Skilled in working in all forms of media including press releases and digital campaigns, printed materials, social media, audio, and video, etc.
· Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
· Able to maintain strictest confidentiality and exhibit sensitivity to cultural and personal issues.
· Able to work independently with minimal supervision and complete tasks in a timely manner.
· Able to multitask with strong time management skills.
· Excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
· Respect for all Tribal Members, Tribal Officials, Supervisors, and Co-Workers
Licenses/Certifications/Other:
· Current valid Driver’s License.
· Must be able to successfully pass an adjudicated background check as a condition of employment.
· Must be able to complete pre-employment drug test with a negative result.
Native American preference policy is as follows: Legally enrolled Eastern Shawnee Tribal members shall be given preference if the tribal member’s experience, qualifications, training, and all other criteria including the job posting are equal. Tribal Members or Citizens of other federally recognized Tribes shall have second preference following the same criteria, followed by any other applicants. (Resolution # 021011-R-03) Only Certified Degree of Indian Blood cards will be accepted as verification of Native American Heritage for other tribes.
