Overview

The Vermont Attorney General’s Office has an immediate opening for a full-time Deputy Solicitor General to work in the Office’s Appellate Unit. The responsibilities of this position include briefing and arguing appeals on behalf of the State of Vermont in cases before the Vermont Supreme Court and the Second Circuit, assisting the Office’s other divisions with complex trial litigation, and assisting the Solicitor General in supervising all the Office’s appellate litigation. The position may also be responsible for providing advice on the constitutionality of proposed legislation and other state actions, reviewing requests to join multi-state litigation and amicus curiae briefs in the federal appellate courts including the United States Supreme Court, conducting appellate advocacy trainings for the office, and performing other projects as requested by the Attorney General. The division of the Deputy Solicitor General’s time may vary; the successful candidate should expect to spend approximately a quarter of their time on other projects outside of appellate.


The position is located at the Attorney General’s Office at 109 State Street in Montpelier, Vermont.

Compensation

This Assistant Attorney General position is an exempt full-time position. Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the State of Vermont Attorney Pay Plan. Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar or be eligible to obtain admission by waiver. The candidate should have excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills; a strong interest in constitutional law; and a willingness to work on a wide variety of subject matters. Prior appellate experience, including clerkship experience, is strongly preferred. 1-2 years of prior litigation experience also preferred.
