Job Summary
The Credit Officer is an integral part of the SBA team. This leadership will support and advance the strategy and business goals for the bank’s SBA business line, and lead the bank’s efforts in SBA problem loans, claims, lawsuits and disposition.
Essential Job Functions
- Build, coach, and develop a high-performing SBA lending Credit culture with a focus on safety and soundness standards in collaboration with the leadership team.
- Use strong credit and analytical skills to coach others to evaluate, underwrite, and prepare presentation for credit approval and loan closing.
- Maintain clear communication and guidance to loan officers on loan structure, eligibility, and interpretation of the SBA SOP.
- Ensure the credit decision process complies with the SBA SOP and other internal and external guidelines.
- Underwrite SBA guaranteed loans in a competitive environment, and in an effective and expedient manner to support SBA loan production.
- Demonstrate the use of relevant and accurate information, data, analytics, and research are used to make, and support, recommendations to ensure proper oversight of the SBA loan portfolio.
- Complete required compliance training and perform all job functions in compliance with applicable law, regulations, and bank policy and procedures.
- Maintain expert-level proficiency in SBA lending programs and requirements through active engagement in industry associations, seminars and training, and be responsible for leading the training effort for other members of the bank.
- Develop and update Government Guaranteed Loan Policy, Government Guaranteed Underwriting Guidelines, and Underwriting Procedures to comply with SBA SOP and Bank Loan policies. Assist with development of bank internal SBA loan forms and documents.
- Lead and support the bank’s efforts in effective resolution of problem loans, claims, lawsuits, and disposition.
Qualifications/Requirements
- 5+ years of SBA underwriting and processing experience. Previous work-related skill, knowledge or experience is required.
- Advanced level of work experience, knowledge and training in all SBA loan servicing activities and terminology, including SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Knowledge of packaging, originating, underwriting, and processing SBA loans.
- Advanced knowledge of related state and federal banking compliance regulations, and other Bank lending policies.
- Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions, interpret documents, understand procedures, write reports and correspondence, and speak clearly to customers and colleagues.
- Bachelor’s Degree (BA) or equivalent from a 4-year college or university; 5+ years or more of related experience and/or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Work related experience should consist of SBA underwriting duties with a financial institution.
