Coordinator of Youth Ministry and Confirmation
Reports to: Pastor
Term: Exempt, Full-Time, Salary, 12 months
General Statement of Responsibilities:
The Coordinator of Youth Ministry and Confirmation is responsible for the implementation of weekly youth programs including design of curriculum, leader and volunteer training, and special events of the middle school and high school groups with an emphasis on preparing the middle school youth to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. This ministry position designs and implements catechetical and relational programs for youth that meet the guidelines of the
Archdiocese.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
The essential functions/major responsibilities listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Duties and responsibilities are also subject to change by the parish as the needs of the parish and requirements of the job change. The primary areas of responsibility are:
1. Coordinating curriculum development and implementation to meet objectives set forth by the Archdiocese of
Kansas City in Kansas for Middle School and High School youth ministry
- Plan and implement youth activities for Middle School students and families.
- Plan and implement youth activities for High School students and families.
- Prepare all lessons in advance for each semester and summer months.
- Plan and implement the two-year Confirmation Preparation for students and families.
- Communicate with parents and teens about all opportunities and publicize to the parish.
- Communicate with parents and teens regarding curriculum and requirements.
- Plan and implement retreats, summer trips and social opportunities.
2. Organizing and training of volunteers
- Recruit and train volunteers to be part of the leadership and support team with an emphasis on young adult leaders and parents.
- Train leaders and volunteers prior to the beginning of each semester.
- Provide monthly support and training sessions with leaders and volunteers.
- Deliver weekly communication with leaders and volunteers.
- Ensure that all leaders and volunteers are VIRTUS trained and that they participate in on-going formation.
3. Administrative Tasks
- Work with Faith Formation and school staff to maintain accurate records (attendance, permission slips, etc.).
- Work with staff to schedule all room needs.
- Prepare yearly budget for all Youth related activities and follow set budget while following all Archdiocesan accounting procedures.
- Participate in Archdiocesan youth ministry meetings and communicate and plan with regional youth ministers.
- Participate in on-going faith formation and educational opportunities.
- Attend all Parish Staff Meetings.
- Work with staff to coordinate all social media and publicity for above programs.
- Report all necessary information to Virtus coordinator and civil authorities.
Position Skills, Qualities, and Competencies
The Youth Minister position requires an understanding of present-day approaches to youth ministry and the ability to research resources for youth ministry. They must also have the ability to recruit and empower volunteers and collaborate well with them and others in carrying out the parish’s mission and the mission of youth ministry.
The incumbent must be a Catholic in good reputation; take responsibility; be proactive, well organized, and diplomatic; be attentive to details; possess the ability to work collaboratively; operate proactively and independently with limited supervision; maintain confidence; and, manage conflict resolution.
The incumbent interfaces with staff colleagues, parishioners, parish volunteers, diocesan office staff, and third parties.
This requires effective and appropriate communication skills including maintaining confidence and discretion related to sensitive matters.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in theology, catechesis or similar academic discipline.
- Experience in working with teens, young adults and specific team building and training.
- Ability to effectively speak in public.
- Collaborative skills that serve to motivate volunteers.
- Knowledge of how to use technology and new media to communicate the Church’s message.
Physical Demands & Job Conditions
Work is performed mostly in a standard parish setting, in an office and in large and small group settings. Office is in a two-story building with an elevator. This position requires the incumbent to work hours that include many evenings and weekends.

Fidelity to Church Teaching
Since this position is a visible representative of the Catholic Church, it is necessary that the incumbent be a practicing
Catholic, registered in a Catholic parish or Catholic faith community, and embraces in word and deed the Church’s teachings on faith and morals as articulated by the Church’s magisterium.
