Job Summary

The College Counselor will have overall responsibility for leading the college guidance program, including but not limited to overseeing each student’s college application process, scholarship applications, and standardized testing. The College Counselor works in a collaborative team environment under the supervision of the Division Head. This is an 11-month position as there will be some required summer duties. This position is eligible for full benefits.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

● Actively support the mission of the fletcher school in the execution of his/her role and responsibilities.

● Work in collaboration with teachers, administration, parents, and outside resources to support student needs.

● Work in collaboration with other school counselors to establish a comprehensive counseling program for the school.

● Provide strategies, advice, support, and guidance to students and their families throughout the application process and in making the best, individualized college choice.

● Meet with students individually and in groups to educate and empower them on how to navigate the college process, admissions trends, and individual college options.

● Plan and present informational workshops for students on preparing applications, writing essays, and financial aid.

● Ensure students are trained and can successfully utilize Naviance (or selected software platform for college search) and establish accounts when appropriate.

● Assist students in identifying resources for scholarships and financial aid for colleges and universities.

● Create and submit materials to colleges in support of college applicants.

● Prepare transcripts for students.

● Facilitate visits between students and college representatives at the school.

● Cultivate mutually beneficial working relationships with college admissions professionals and local area college counseling colleagues.

● Visit college campuses to stay abreast of university offerings and maintain familiarity with signature programs including support programs for students with learning differences.

● Pursue professional development opportunities to keep current regarding new trends, policies, and opportunities in higher education.

● Participate in committee, department, and staff meetings as well as school-sponsored events that would enhance and/or benefit from your area of expertise.

● Provide parent support and assist families with referrals to community resources regarding post-secondary opportunities.

● Coordinate aspects of the standardized testing process for SAT, ACT, PSAT, and PACT, including arranging prep classes and billing, applying for student accommodations, selecting and training readers, administering the tests, and submitting scores.

● Work closely with parents, monitoring testing registration deadlines for college entrance testing.

● Work closely with parents and the Enrollment & Research Coordinator to ensure psychoeducational student testing is updated on a timely basis to meet deadlines for college entrance testing.

● Perform related duties as required.

Other Duties

● Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds.

● Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.

● Participate in Professional Learning Programs, Professional Learning Communities, and other appropriate professional activities.

● Participate in class trips, including overnight, full-division field trips.

● When assigned, support students in the role of an advisor, assist with carpool, monitor lunch and/or playground, and supervise Wednesday study hall.

● Support or supervise extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations as directed.

● Work as a member of a team; support a collegial working environment that includes other departments and areas.

● Model appropriate and positive behavior with students, parents, colleagues, and other members of the community.

● Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, or social work; Master’s degree preferred

● College Counseling Certificate preferred

● 3 to 5 years of experience in college counseling or college admissions

● Experience working with students with specific learning disabilities and/or ADHD preferred

● Experience using Naviance Software is beneficial

● Excellent written and oral communication skills

● Proficient with technology

● Willingness to obtain Apple Teacher certification.

● Willingness to attend Orton Gillingham training.

● Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships. General Requirements

● A criminal history background check is required of all employees.
