INTRODUCTION
The State of Connecticut, UConn Library is seeking applications for a Buildings & Grounds Patrol Officer to join a dedicated team that serves and supports the UConn community in its use of Library facilities and services at the Storrs campus. Under the general direction and reporting to the Head of Facilities & Security, the Buildings and Grounds Officer will enforce the patron, facilities, and environmental policies of the UConn Library. The successful candidate will have a strong approach to public service, excellent professional judgment, and be able to handle emergency situations.
This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. The incumbent in this role must be available for weather or other emergency openings and possess the ability to be flexible and adjust to schedule changes. The schedule for this position is listed below, with an hourly rate of $22.49, which is non-negotiable.
Academic Schedule:
Thursday 7:00PM-2:30AM, Friday 2:00PM-9:30PM, Saturday 12:30PM-9:30PM, Sunday 9:30AM-5:30PM (32 hours/week)
Summer/Winter Session:
Thursday 1:30PM-9:30PM, Friday 10:00AM-6:00PM, Saturday 10:00AM-6:30PM, Sunday 11:00AM-6:30PM
SELECTION PLAN

Employment will be contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination, including drug testing, as well as a criminal background check.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Enforce regulations relating to the control of state property.
- Provide assistance to library patrons and the general public.
- Guard entrances and exits to prevent trespass, vandalism, and theft.
- Perform routine patrol of the Library; check mechanical systems and monitor alarm systems and report troubles to the appropriate departments.
- Perform opening and closing procedures including securing all interior and exterior doors.
- Enforce Library policies related to eating and drinking, smoking, disruptive behavior, and the use of classrooms and library space as well as the University’s student code of conduct.
- Write accurate incident reports and maintain security logs.
- May assist Police and Fire Departments in emergencies such as building evacuations, suspect searches, and medical emergencies.
- Maintain the Library’s lost and found.
- Provide escorts for staff and student workers as needed.
- Sign for and receive deliveries in the absence of the Mail Services Coordinator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Any experience or training which would provide the skills and abilities indicated above.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience recording and checking inventory and securing property.
- Demonstrated knowledge working with building environmental systems including monitoring and reporting malfunctions.
- Demonstrated ability to use the internet, current technology, and basic software as needed for the position.
- Ability to think and act quickly in an emergency with judgment and discretion.
- Demonstrated ability to support a diverse and inclusive population.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Appointment to positions within the Connecticut Marketing Authority will be in accordance with Section 22-63a(d) of the Connecticut General Statutes.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain a Standard First Aid Certificate and/or CPR certification.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the checking of references and facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have generally good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness, and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
- Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to the attendant discomforts of working outdoors, to the effort of prolonged periods of walking and standing while on foot patrol and/or guard duty, and to some danger of injury in performing the duties of the class.
