Position description

Amend is a public health and human rights program at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and University of California, Berkeley (UCB), that aims to improve the health conditions of residents and staff in prisons and reduce the debilitating effects of incarceration. It also works with policy makers and community leaders to promote decarceration strategies. The program focuses on culture-change initiatives, staff training, public education, advocacy, and policy-oriented research. It collaborates with UC Berkeley, other universities in California and beyond.

One of the Amend projects CalPROTECT (California Prison Roadmap for Targeting Efforts to Address the Ecosystem of COVID Transmission) is a multidisciplinary initiative that includes public health experts, clinicians, and scientists in behavior, environmental engineering, and economics at Amend at UCSF and UCB. The project collects information on COVID transmission in California's CDCR/CCHCS facilities. It takes into account the experiences and perspectives of correctional staff, medical personnel, and patients to provide evidence-based recommendations to correctional leaders and policymakers. As COVID transitions from pandemic to an endemic infection, the focus of CalPROTECT will transition to a focus on epidemic/pandemic preparedness as well as support future outbreak responses to protect the health and dignity of those in prisons and jails.

The ARCH Network is another project of Amend which focuses on the study of criminal justice-involved older adults. The goal of the network is to bring together researchers dedicated to studying the experiences and health disparities of this population and support their research through mentorship, funding, and collaborations.

The ARCH Network's goal is to bring national researchers dedicated to studying the experiences of criminal justice-involved older adults and the drivers of later life health disparities in this population together in a community of collaboration and support. The network aims to support new and established scientists in the development and implementation of research through a national mentorship program for junior investigators, directly funding pilot and exploratory research, and creating opportunities for new multidisciplinary research collaborations.

The Assistant Researcher will work both independently and as part of the research team on various research efforts supported by Amend. The researcher will also help to ensure coordination between research efforts at UC Berkeley, UCSF, and other collaborating institutions. Initially, we expect that the assistant researcher will support the NIH-funded Aging Research in Criminal Justice Health (ARCH) Network (R24) and the impact evaluation of Amend's programming around public health-driven culture change in US prisons.

The Assistant Researcher will use their expertise as a public health researcher and medical professional. They will apply their analytical skills, clinical practice knowledge, and their knowledge of research policies, procedures, operations, and administration to support at least two complex policy-oriented research programs. The ideal candidate should have a strong ability to research, analyze and develop solutions for a wide range of public health policy issues, particularly those involving multiple stakeholders such as policy-makers, community leaders, healthcare professionals, and other professionals.

This position is being offered at 50% time. The Assistant Researcher will be able to seek additional funding to increase this percentage.

A successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent judgment and will be adept at working with multiple competing deadlines, have experience working with complex policies, and be highly proficient and dependable in project management. Our program values diversity - we welcome and encourage candidates of diverse backgrounds to apply.
