Definition of Classification:
The Assistant Director of Student Engagement works under the direct supervision of the Assistant Dean of Student Engagement. This role supports and enhances the CAS undergraduate experience by creating and executing new student orientation (first year and transfer) and associated onboarding efforts, serving as lead advisor to the Associated Students of the University of Redlands (ASUR), supporting Greek Life, and creating and implementing retention and persistence driving programs to include new initiatives informed by the University’s strategic plan.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Primary Responsibilities:
- Directs planning, collaboration, marketing, and execution of new student (first year and transfer) orientation, focused on the implementation of developmental and programmatic strategies that aid in the establishment of meaningful connections, a sense of place, and confidence, as well as a seamless transition for all participants, to include families and other student supporters.
- Guides and supports the Associated Students of the University of Redlands (ASUR) in an advisory capacity and provides support and guidance to the Greek community. Leverages relationship building, mentoring and creative problem-solving to impact both student growth and the effectiveness for these student organizations, as well as many others. Advises on the development, implementation and assessment of policy and practice and assumes fiduciary responsibility for funds within their portfolio. Assumes a lead role in Greek community accountability- and partners with Greek alum in their role as supporters and mentors. In addition, supports efforts to enhance the transfer experience.
- Supervises graduate student assistants, as well as undergraduate student employees. Supervise, plan, direct, and assign work of assigned staff; make hiring and disciplinary decisions; provide feedback on performance and approve timesheets.
- Aligns work and goals with the University and Student Affairs division learning outcomes to include Perseverance and Professionalism, Communication, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration and Teamwork and Engaged Stewardship.
- Serves as budget manager and financial steward for budgetary accounts in the Student Engagement portfolio, including ASUR, Orientation and onboarding, Transfer Student Success Team, retreat programming and others.
- Assesses the learning outcomes and impact of onboarding, ASUR and other programming; uses data to make informed decisions on how to best support students with future programming. Contributes as a member of the student affairs Impact Team, supporting departmental assessment efforts.
- Coordinates University-wide planning efforts related to implementation, communication and marketing, contract execution, and logistics for orientation, Homecoming, University traditions and other events that originate from within Student Involvement and Success.
- Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, by fostering environments that are open and accessible to all identities, races, and protected groups.
- Actively seeks opportunities and builds programming for involvement with underrepresented groups of students.
- Communicates with both students and colleagues across multiple communication modes; directly communicates in-person via student instruction, coaching and mentorship; communicates digitally via email, social media across various audiences including externally.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Serves on committees as a representative of the student experience, promoting and enhancing opportunities for student onboarding, diversity, equity, inclusion, retention, community relationships, campus policies and student wellness.
- Supports division wide efforts on assessment, as well as communication and promotion of department as well as broader campus programs.
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

Experience/Training/Education:
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3-5 years of professional experience within higher education, student affairs, or related field.
- Substantive experience in event planning and execution, including event development, management, marketing, delivery and assessment.
- Strong verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to perform under pressure, relate positively to people, and motivate others to function as a fully participative member of a team.
- Working knowledge of student support service units on a college campus.
- Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze, and define the problem, draw valid conclusions, and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and a thorough knowledge of department and campus policies, procedures, and practices.
- Demonstrated capacity to interpret and enforce procedures and policies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in higher education or related field
- Previous experience working within a Student Affairs division on a college campus, to include advising student organizations.
- Experience delivering holistic student care.
- Demonstrated skills in leadership, hiring and supervision, group facilitation, advising, training, programming, community development, conduct processes, mediation, and crisis intervention.
- Experience mentoring/advising Greek organizations on a college campus.
- Understanding of FERPA student records privacy regulations and other federal regulations. Experience writing policy and process documents.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Communicate effectively and follow instructions, both verbally and in writing.
- Aptitude to learn new and evolving technology and recommend ways to improve position’s efficiency.
- Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability to recommend appropriate courses of action within established guidelines.
- Ability to foster strong, positive relationships and align both internal and external resources to achieve university objectives.
- Ability to exercise discretion and work with confidentiality.
- Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

Working Conditions:
Standard office setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort.
Physical Demands:
Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; may travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.

PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs. Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
