JOB PURPOSE:
The Artsy Peer recovery coaches offer recovery support services to people (ages 18+) in or seeking recovery. They involve the process of giving and receiving non-clinical assistance to support long-term recovery from substance use disorders. An Artsy peer recovery coach brings the lived experience of recovery and art processes, combined with training and supervision, to assist others in initiating and maintaining recovery, helping to enhance the quality of personal and family life in long-term recovery. The Artsy Peer recovery support services can support or be an alternative to clinical treatment for substance use disorders.
Artsy Peer recovery coaches walk side by side with individuals seeking recovery from substance use disorders. They help people create their own recovery plans and develop their own recovery pathways.
DUTIES/ACTIVITIES:
EMOTIONAL. Recovery coach offers various forms of emotional support regardless of the person’s stage in treatment or recovery. Recovery coach is able to relate and empathize by sharing their lived experience and using Motivational Interviewing techniques in various settings, such as:
- In-person one-on-one check-ins using tools such as PCOMS and Recovery Capital Scale sheets
- In-person group meetings using PCOMS
- Telephone support
- Assertive outreach
- Family groups
- Any other time recovery coach interacts with peers
INFORMATIONAL. Recovery coach can provide valuable information pertaining to:
- Their personal recovery story and lived experience
- Artist expressions through art modalities
- Pathways of recovery available in and around workplace and community
- Strong knowledge of recovery resources, including residential treatment, medication assisted treatment (MAT) programs, substance abuse intensive outpatient programs (SAIOP), detox facilities, hospital systems, recovery community organizations (RCOs), etc.
- Ability to effectively provide warm hand-offs for a person seeking a different level or type of care
INSTRUMENTAL. Recovery coach can connect a person to concrete supports that contribute to overall health and wellbeing, including but not limited to:
- Clothing closet
- Food bank
- Welfare services
- Healthcare clinics
- Housing support
- Transportation services
- Employment support/job readiness and training
AFFILIATIONAL SUPPORT. Recovery coach can organize, host, and/or connect people to the following activities at the workplace or in the community to support overall health and wellness, such as:
- Prosocial Activities, including but not limited to:
- Movie Showings
- Gaming events
- Recovery rallies
- Community events
- Other fun social outings or events
- Recreational Activities, including but not limited to:
- dance
- art
- drumming
- theater dramatization
- creative writing, poetry
- music
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of the importance of self-care and work-life balance
- Demonstrated skill in active listening, asking supportive open-ended questions, awareness of self
- Ability to work as a collaborative team member, supporting others providing peer services and team leadership
- Knowledge of the addiction recovery process and principles of a recovery-oriented system of care
- Understanding of and support for medication-assisted recovery and practices
- Familiarity with community-based recovery support services
- Ability to develop and sustain relationship with individuals and organizations providing support and services in the community
- Ability to treat all individuals with dignity and respect
- Understanding of and ability to maintain appropriate boundaries
- Cultural competency skills and experience with culturally diverse populations
- Strong customer service ethic
SKILLSETS:
- Proficient in MS Office Suite
- Ability to collect and maintain service attendance data
- Ability to effectively utilize PCOMS and Recovery Capitol Scale
- Demonstrated ability to effectively apply Motivational Interviewing when interacting with peers
- Ability to advocate for self-directed care and empower peers to take ownership of their own recovery
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Certified Addiction Recovery Empowerment Specialist (CARES) certification and or 2 Years sobriety
- Active CPS-AD certification indicating passing grade on CARES exam and maintenance of CEU requirements
- High school diploma or GED
