Job description

Piper Maddox specializes in the Renewable Energy industry, covering the Solar, Energy Storage, Grid Edge, E-Mobility, Wind, & Energy Efficiency markets. We are looking for an experienced Applications or Sales Engineer to join a rapidly growing North American business within the renewable energy industry, specializing in cutting-edge on-site power systems for the commercial & industrial market. This business offers its own microgrid solution, and also partners with third party developers to acquire and finance a broader range of distributed energy assets.

Title: Applications Engineer, Northeast

Type: Full-time, permanent position

Location: Hybrid/remote with up to 25% travel. New Jersey or the greater tri-state area preferred.

Reporting directly into the CTO, the Applications Engineer (Northeast) will play a key technical role within the business by providing applications engineering support for the company’s distributed energy and microgrid projects. Projects typically include managing a variety of DER and microgrid assets – such as solar, energy storage, controls, and reciprocating engines.

Responsibilities:

  • Work cross-functionally with the Business Development, Execution, and Commercial teams to evaluate and develop/design the technical solutions, ensuring the integration of the microgrid or other distributed energy technologies is technically correct, practical, and cost effective. This includes working with existing service entrance one-line drawings or creating new ones.
  • This isn’t a customer-facing role, but this individual will work closely with the Business Development/Sales team to scope the projects, providing support on the front end.
  • Work with switchgear manufacturers and other OEMs to develop innovative and scalable designs and costing, which requires working at voltage levels of 13.8, 4160, 480, and 208 depending on site and system size.
  • Provide subject matter expertise regarding solar, battery, and generator designs to optimize performance, reliability, and sustainability for each customer site.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) space.
  • Experience supporting the sales/business development side of things.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, power systems, or related discipline.
  • Experience with distributed energy systems, such as solar, storage and natural gas generators. Experience with microgrids a plus.
  • Strong understanding of rotating power with reciprocating engines in the 200 to 2000kw size range per engine.
  • Knowledge of the various DER power sources within the Microgrid and how they best interface with the utility to provide a more efficient system.
  • Knowledge of systems controls for all the DER’s and how they can be utilized to accomplish specific operating goals while part of the Microgrid.
  • Regarding the design work, this individual only needs to understand the technical connections and power loads, they won't do CAD design work.
