About ShoreCorps/AmeriCorps:

ShoreCorps is a State AmeriCorps program, funded in part by the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism. AmeriCorps is a civil society program supported by the U.S. federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors engaging adults in public service work with a goal of "helping others and meeting critical needs in the community." Members commit to full-time or part-time positions offered by a network of nonprofit community organizations and public agencies, to fulfill assignments in the fields of education, public safety, health care, and environmental protection. The program is often seen as a domestic Peace Corps. It employs more than 75,000 Americans in intensive service each year.

Position Description:

Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore is seeking a half-time AmeriCorps member for the 2023-2024 service year.

Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore is a nonprofit that inspires and prepares young people for success. The Perdue Henson Junior Achievement Center, opening in the fall of 2023, will provide experiential learning of financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship to more than 10,000 students each year. This 25,000 sq. ft. regional facility, located at the Oak Ridge Commons in Salisbury, will serve students from six counties on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and one county from the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

The JA Center will house two of our signature programs; JA BizTown and JA Finance Park. JA BizTown serves our 5th grade students allowing them to become business leaders, consumers, and employees for a day. JA Finance Park teaches our 7th grade students about personal finance and career exploration.

The AmeriCorps member will be responsible for working with the JA Education Team to assist with the daily operations of the JA BizTown and/or JA Finance Park simulations.

Member Responsibilities include:

• Simulation Prep and Reset – Ensure that the simulation space and all materials for students and volunteers are prepped and ready prior to their arrival.
• Simulation Support – Provide daily support to the JA BizTown and/or JA Finance Park simulation lead including: Materials – monitoring inventory, printing, distributing and collecting; Volunteer Support – ensure volunteers are staying on schedule and answer any questions they have; Student Support – help manage student behavior and make sure that they are completing all necessary tasks; Tech support – troubleshoot common issues with technology used in the simulations.
• Student Safety & Security - Assist with the orderly unloading and loading of buses upon arrival and departure, escort students into secure space, verify student numbers on arrival and departure.
• Customer Service – Provide the highest level of customer service to all visitors (volunteers, teachers, students, etc.) to the JA Center.

Requirements for applicants include the following:

• Have a strong interest in serving the community
• Be able to relate to diverse populations
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Able to provide a copy of either high school diploma, GED, or college transcript
• Have reliable transportation
• Be available to attend the free, AmeriCorps class at SU alternate Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., during the Fall and Spring semesters.
• Must successfully pass a comprehensive Criminal History Check, which includes FBI fingerprinting
• Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident alien
• Applicants DO NOT need to be college students, anyone from the community who fits the above requirements may participate.

Candidates should have availability 2-4 days per week (Monday-Friday), between the hours of 7:30 am and 4:00 pm (exact timing can vary).

The member will begin on or after August 15th, 2023 and must complete 900 hours by August 14th, 2024.

This position is offered through a partnership with ShoreCorps, the AmeriCorps program at Salisbury University. It is contingent upon federal funding and approval of the AmeriCorps office.
