Benton Community School District is seeking an Activities Director/Assistant Principal for the 2023-2024 school year.

Must have a teaching license or be willing to obtain Activities Director Authorization. Must have a secondary administration degree or currently working toward completion within 1-2 years. Will work under the direct supervision of the building administrators for Middle School and High School.

Position begins July 1, 2023.

BASIC FUNCTION:

Provide each enrolled secondary student an opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities that will foster skill development, a sense of worth and competence, a knowledge and understanding of the rewards of activity involvement and the principles of fair play and good sportsmanship.


SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Administration degree, Bachelors degree or higher in Education from an accredited college or university.

  • Valid Iowa teaching license with appropriate endorsements.

  • Secondary teaching and extra duty assignment experience.

  • Completion of Child Abuse Reporting Training.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 261 or 262 -Day Contract.


EVALUATION: The Superintendent evaluates the performance of this job.


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies and administrative rules.

  • Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.

  • Maintain a “service orientation” and treat all students, parents, staff, and visitors with professional courtesy.

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students and job while communicating the same to the community.

  • Attend seminars, trainings, classes, and professional development as needed to stay current with state and federal regulations and requirements and maintain licensure.

  • Dress appropriately for the position and work required.

  • Accept constructive criticism and suggestions while seeking to improve each performance responsibility.

  • Maintain professionalism related to confidentiality of student records and the school operation.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Organize and administer the overall program of extracurricular athletics, both intramural and interscholastic, for the district.

  • Provide leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff members.

  • Foster good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.

  • Assume responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all interscholastic athletic events.

  • Arrange transportation for athletic contest participants.

  • Develop and place into operation appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities.

  • Verify each athlete’s eligibility according to established physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport.

  • Prepare and administer the athletic program budget.

  • Supervise all ticket sales and fundraising events of the athletic program and assume responsibility for proper handling of funds.

  • Arrange all details of visiting team’s needs, including lodging, meals, towels, gymnasium services, and field assistance, as appropriate.

  • Make arrangements for non-school use of playing fields and facilities.

  • Arrange field and gym practice schedules.

  • Administer the insurance program covering school athletes, and assume responsibility for all processing of reports and claims.

  • Keep records of the results of all junior and senior high school athletic contests, and maintain a record file of all award winners, stating the date and type of award, including athletic scholarships.

  • Direct an in-school, extracurricular program designed to foster support for the athletic teams and school spirit among non-participants.

  • Plan and supervises an annual recognition program for school athletes.

  • Secure contracts with officials for all home athletic events.

  • Make sure all athletes have properly signed physical forms on file.

  • Emphasize to coaches and athletes safety precautions and ensure that all athletic activities are properly supervised by coaches.

  • Communicate to coaches expectations and responsibilities in terms of their performance.

  • Make sure coaches and athletes are aware of rules, regulations, and policies of the district.

  • Inform of all conference, sectional, district, regional, and state competitions.

  • Post emergency phone numbers.

  • Complete (or have coaches complete) all conference and state forms, required officials’ evaluations, and other required correspondence.

  • Oversee coaches’ issuance of and collection of school equipment, and uniforms, and care and maintenance of same.

  • Possess knowledge of rules and regulations of the various sports and keep abreast of changes.

  • Inform coaches of changes in conference and state rules, regulations, policies, etc.

  • Keep an inventory (through coaches) of all athletic equipment, uniforms, and supplies.

  • Order equipment needed for all sports within the athletic budget.

  • Work with coaches in terms of care of facilities and equipment.

  • Recommend to the administration improvements in facilities, equipment, and athletic policies.

  • Discipline athletes when problems are beyond the coaches’ normal range of responsibility.

  • Attend conference Athletic Director meetings.

  • Assist in supervising athletic events.

  • Assist coaches in collecting fees/charges from students.

  • Ensure that all state mandates regarding athletics are being followed by the district.

  • Evaluate coaches in terms of their performance, conduct, handling of athletes, and care of equipment and facilities.

  • Assist coaches in the awarding of letters to athletes.

  • Provide the principal and/or superintendent (for file purposes) any state and conference correspondence with which they should be knowledgeable.

  • Provide public relations and media releases on a regular basis.

  • Participate in Management Team meetings and activities.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to dial, answer and communicate via a telephone in a clear, precise voice.

  • Able to write and record reports utilizing basic computer functions.

  • Able to climb stairs or stand and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Able to sit, reach, carry, push, bend body at waist, bend both knees, twist, and stoop while handling items.

  • Able to read and interpret policies, procedures and employee handbook.

  • Occasionally lift up to 25 -50 pounds using proper lifting techniques.

  • Able to hear and speak in order to communicate with students, parents, co-workers, and supervisors.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Primary work setting is the Assigned Attendance Center but duties at times may require working within various attendance centers in the district or accompanying students to special events such as work experience or field trips.

  • May be required to ride a school bus or drive school vehicles to carry out responsibilities of the position.

  • May be required to work additional hours as required for special events or during certain times of the year.
